All facts and dates are taken from this book. ref It was originally established as The Mission of Our Lady of the Assumption among the Hurons in Detroit in 1728 by the Jesuit missionary, Fr. Armand De La Richardie, S.J. In 1765, a 60 x 30  ft. church was erected for the Hurons and some sixty French settler families. Assumption became an official, canonical institution in 1767 under its first pastor, Fr. Pierre Potier S.J. who remained at his post until his death in 1781. That year, the Bishop of Quebec sent his Vicar General , Fr. Francois Xavier Hubert to be pastor of Assumption parish. Fr. Hubert initiated plans to build a rectory and a school. A shortage of land for this project was rectified by a donation of land from the Hurons on March 6, 1782. The rectory was built in 1785 and in 1786 as Coadjutor to the Bishop of Quebec , Fr. Hubert, who had since relocated for his new post, contributed to the building of a new church and sent two women from Quebec to establish a school. The new church opened in 1787 under Fr. Fran ois Xavier Dufaux , who had replaced the interim pastor, Fr. Pierre Fr chette in 1786. In 1796, Fr. Jean Baptiste Marchand began his thirty year pastorate of Assumption parish. Upon Fr. Marchand s death in 1825, his assistant, Fr. Joseph Crevier , succeeded him. Fr. Crevier was pastor until 1831 when he was replaced by Fr. Angus Macdonell . On Ju ...   more details

  1. Sisters of the Presentation of Mary

The Sisters of the Presentation of Mary are a religious congregation in the Latin Rite branch of the Catholic Church . It was founded in 1796 at Thueyts in the Ard che department of south central France , by Blessed Anne Marie Rivier 1768 1838 originally, the congregation was devoted to the education of young girls. The mother house was permanently established at Bourg Saint And ol , which is located in the Diocese of Viviers in the Rh ne Valley , southern France. Today, the Sisters minister in eighteen countries, and are present on all five continents. ref http www.presentationofmary.ca about.html Presentation of Mary, Canada About us ref The Sisters in Canada The provincial house in Canada was founded on 18 October 1853, by Jean Charles Prince , first Bishop of St. Hyacinthe . It is also the mother house and where the religious make their vows. The first six sisters, with Mother Marie St Maurice as superior, settled at Sainte Marie de Monnoir Marieville, Quebec , where the Rev. Fr. E. Crevier, pastor of the parish, had prepared a convent . They opened a boarding school and a class for day pupils. In 1855 the novitiate was transferred to Saint Hugues, Quebec and in 1858 it was definitively located at St. Hyacinthe in a convent which was occupied up to this time by the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame from Montreal . This house was of insufficient accommodation and the community was obliged to erect, not far from the seminary, a large building of which they took possession in 1876. The house occupied since 1858 then became an academy. Later it was necessary to add a large annex to the first building. The students were installed there in 1907. The provincial house is at the same time the mother house of the institution in Canada. The Canadian Sisters are engaged in a variety of apostolates campus ministry in secondary schools, teaching, Catholic Christian Outreach at universities, nursing, inner city, spiritual direction pastoral care and working with the pe ...   more details

  1. Henry Homer

Henry Homer , called the younger 1753 1791 was an English classical scholar. Life The eldest of the seventeen children of Henry Homer the elder , he was born at Warwick in 1753. In 1758 he entered Rugby School , of which, at the age of fourteen, he was the head boy. He then studied for three years at Birmingham . In November 1768 he was admitted to Emmanuel College, Cambridge , under Richard Farmer , where he became acquainted with Samuel Parr , who helped to direct his studies. Among his close college friends were William Bennet bishop William Bennet and George Dyer poet George Dyer . He graduated B.A. in 1773, M.A. in 1776, and B.D. in 1783. ref Venn HMR768H Homer, Henry ref Homer was elected a Fellow of his college in 1778, and returned to the university from Warwickshire , where he had been living for about three years, soon after his election. About this time he was admitted into deacon s orders. He now resided chiefly at Cambridge, and spent much time in the university library, turning his attention to philological studies. In consequence of religious scruples Homer declined to take priest s orders in compliance with the college statutes, and his fellowship was therefore declared vacant in June 1788. He died at Birdingbury of a rapid decline on 4 May 1791, and was buried in the churchyard there. Works In 1787 he joined with Parr in the republication of William Bellenden s Tracts , and prepared editions of several classical authors. At the suggestion of Parr, he undertook a variorum edition of Horace , but died before its completion. It was finally published by Charles Combe , and occasioned a public literary quarrel between Combe and Parr. Homer edited The first, twenty fifth, and thirty first books of Livy , from Drakenborch s edition, with Dissertations, 1787. Tacitus , De Moribus Germanorum et de Vita Agricol , London, 1788.
