- List of crinoid genera
Disputed date May 2010 Expert subject date May 2010 File Fossile seelilie.jpg thumb 300px Fossil crinoid. This list of crinoid genera is an attempt to create a comprehensive listing of all Genus genera that have ever been considered to be crinoid s, excluding purely vernacular terms. The list includes all commonly accepted genera, but also genera that are now considered invalid, doubtful nomen dubium nomina dubia , or were not formally published nomen nudum nomina nuda , as well as synonym zoology junior synonyms of more established names, and genera that are no longer considered crinoids. Naming conventions and terminology Naming conventions and terminology follow the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature ICZN . Technical terms used include Synonym zoology Junior synonym A name which describes the same taxon as a previously published name. If two or more genera are formally designated and the type zoology type specimens are later assigned to the same genus, the first to be published in chronological order is the senior synonym, and all other instances are junior synonyms. Senior synonyms are generally used, except by special decision of the ICZN, but junior synonyms cannot be used again, even if deprecated. Junior synonymy is often subjective, unless the genera described were both based on the same type specimen. Nomen nudum Latin for naked name A name that has appeared in print but has not yet been formally published by the standards of the ICZN. Nomina nuda the plural form are invalid, and are therefore not italicized as a proper generic name would be. If the name is later formally published, that name is no longer a nomen nudum and will be italicized on this list. Often, the formally published name will differ from any nomina nuda that describe the same specimen. Nomen oblitum Latin for forgotten name A name that has not been used in the scientific community for more than fifty years after its original proposal. Preoccupied name A name that is formally published ... more details

- Charles Wachsmuth
One source date March 2012 No footnotes date March 2012 Charles Wachsmuth September 13, 1829 &ndash February 7, 1896 was an American paleontologist born in Hanover, Germany . Educated as a lawyer, he left his profession due to ill health and emigrated to the United States. He settled in Burlington, Iowa where he became fascinated with the crinoid fossils found in the local limestone formations. Within a few years he had built an extensive collection. In 1864 he met Louis Agassiz and the following year traveled to Europe where he studied crinoids in the British Museum and other famous collections. Inspired, he devoted all his energies to the continued collection and study of crinoid fossils. He supplied crinoid specimens to Agassiz in Cambridge and to the British Museum. He befriended another attorney, Frank Springer, in Burlington and together they continued the study of crinoids and published a series of important studies on the subject. Disks are the most commonly preserved part of the crinoid, and can be found in the hundreds in hash fossils. They also can be found individually ... you may find a complete stem. Crinoid anchors were the parts of the crinoid stem that attached the crinoid ... in its ecosystem . A crinoid would have several anchors that were also made of disks. These are not rare, but are not commonly found in crinoid deposits. Crinoid arms are long organs that came out of the crinoid ball. They filtered food particles from the water and are the rarest part of the crinoid. They looked like feathery arms, and they are the reason that crinoid are often called sea lilies. These arms were extremely delicate, and as a result they were rarely preserved. The crinoid ball ... at the top of the crinoid s stem, and some crinoid balls were adorned with spikes. Crinoid arms grew out of the crinoid ball, if you can find a well preserved specimen it is possible to see the spots were its feeding arms attached. It is also possible to see the spot where the stem attached to the crinoid ball. Complete crinoid balls with tentacle attachments are very rare to find, but in some deposits ... of a fossil crinoid is usually calcite crystals, because their skeletons were made of calcite ..., then they are calcite. Sometimes you can find a crinoid that has been split in half, these specimens are very beautiful and are very good for jewelry. When crinoid balls are found, they are usually in large compact groups.
