The EquivalentNational Tertiary Entrance Rank ENTER was the national Australian tertiary entrance rank, administered by Universities Australia previously called the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee . It was a percentile ranking, designed to simplifiy the comparison of entrance levels for students educated in different processes of admission for university applicants from interstate. It was replaced by the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank from 2010. Equivalence The term ENTER was only used in Victoria Australia Victoria , although the actual rank was identical and equivalent to the Universities Admission Index UAI used in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory , and to the Tertiary Entrance Rank TER used in South Australia , the Northern Territory , Tasmania and Western Australia . Queensland used a different system called the Overall Position OP , but conversion tables were published each year to convert the OP to or from an ENTER. Non school leaver university applicants were selected using other criteria usually previous results, or results in the Special Tertiary Admissions Test . Each state s university and government education authorities determined the method of calculation of the ENTER or state equivalent for students from that state, due to the historical differences between different state s education systems. However, these decisions were co ordinated to ensure that the necessary equivalence is maintained i.e. so that an ENTER of 90.00 from Victoria would indicate a sufficiently similar degree of attainment as a UAI of 90.00 from New South Wales, in spite of the differences in each rank s methods of application. Orphan date February 2009 Other uses Equivalence disambiguation The Equivalent was a sum negotiated at 398,000 paid to Scotland by the English Government under the terms of the Acts of Union 1707 . Proposals for it first emerged in the course of abortive Union negotiations in 1702 03. Purpose of The Equivalent The purpose of The Equivalent was ostensibly to take account of the contribution which Scots taxpayers would thereafter make towards servicing the English national debt, and as transitional mitigation of the effects of higher taxes on the Scottish economy. Though attempts have been made to see it as a precise calculation, it is now generally regarded as part of a political bargain designed for other purposes as well, such as the costs of winding up the Company of Scotland which had undertaken the Darien scheme shareholders in and creditors of the Company were to receive 58.6 of The Equivalent ref Watt, Douglas. In social science disciplines such as sociology , political science , geography , and economics , crossnational research is the technique of analyzing an event or process that takes place within a country, while comparing the way that event or process takes place across many different countries. Crossnational research may be qualitative, as in Theda Skocpol s States and Social Revolutions. Alternatively, it may be quantitative, as in Seymour Martin Lipset s research on modernization theory. Crossnational research is a subject of debate. Some scholars object because this kind of research involves comparing dissimilar countries and cultures, while others argue that crossnational quantitative analysis requires unrealistic assumptions. Others defend the research practice, arguing that it may be problematic but it provides a tool for answering questions that would otherwise be unanswerable. Orphan date September 2011 Equivalent latitude is a Lagrangian coordinates Lagrangian coordinate used in atmospheric science , particularly in the study of stratosphere stratospheric dynamics. Each isoline in a map of equivalent latitude follows that of an atmospheric flow tracer tracer and encloses the same area as the latitude line of equivalent value, hence equivalent latitude. Equivalent latitude is calculated from potential vorticity , from passive tracer simulations and from actual measurements of atmospheric tracer s such as ozone . Calculation of equivalent latitude The calculation of equivalent latitude involves creating a monotonic function monotonic mapping between the values of equivalent latitude and the tracer it is based upon higher values of the tracer map to higher values of equivalent latitude. A precise method is to assign a representative area to each of the tracer measurements, filling the entire globe. Thus, for a tracer field regularly gridded in longitude and latitude, grid points closer to the pole will take up a smaller area, in proportion to the cosine of the latitude. Now, sorting rank all the tracer values then form the cumulative sum. The equivalent latitude from the area is given as math phi sin 1 left frac A 2 pi R 2 1 right math where A is the area enclosed to the South A 0 corresponds to the equivalent South Pole and R is the radius of the Earth. This method generates a mapping that is as continuous as the data allows as opposed to binning which produces a coarse grained mapping. References cite journal author1 Douglas R. Refimprove date March 2009 A gate equivalent GE stands for a unit of measure which allows to specify manufacturing technology independent complexity of digital circuit digital electronic circuits . For today s CMOS technologies, the silicon area of a two input drive strength one Negated AND gate NAND logic gate gate usually constitutes the technology dependent unit area commonly referred to as gate equivalent. A specification in gate equivalents for a certain circuit reflects a complexity measure, from which a corresponding silicon area can be deduced for a dedicated manufacturing technology. In digital circuit design, a dedicated standard cell standard cell library is employed for each manufacturing technology e.g., CMOS . The standard cell standard cell library comprises many different logic gate s, for example a NAND gate. For each logical type of logic gate , e.g., a two input NAND, there usually exist different physical realizations in the standard cell standard cell library , for instance with different output drive strengths. Basically, a two input drive strength one NAND gate in CMOS technology consists of four transistor s. If higher output drive strength is required, an additional output driver stage of four transistor s is added.
