George Robert Crotch 1842 1874 was a United Kingdom British entomologist . Born in Cambridge, England 1842 Crotch became interested in insect s, especially Coleoptera , while an undergraduate at University of Cambridge Cambridge University . He worked at the University Library, Cambridge. He collected insects in Europe and in the Autumn of 1872, he left England on an entomological tour of the world initially arriving at Philadelphia and in the Spring Summer of 1873 collected insects in California, Oregon, and the Fraser River in British Colimbia. In 1873 he accepted a position as assistant from Louis Agassiz at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology with Hermann August Hagen . He made collections of Coleoptera in California , Vancouver s Island and Oregon but soon afterwards he died of tuberculosis . Crotch was the author of a number of books, including Checklist of the Coleoptera of America 1873 and A revision of the Coleopterous family Coccinellidae 1874 . In 1834 he gained the Gresham prize medal for his anthem, Bow down thine ear , and in 1835 was appointed organist of St. George s Chapel, Windsor , a post he filled for 47 years, retiring in 1882. He took the degree of Bachelor of Music Mus.B. of the University of Oxford in June 1838, having matriculated at New College, Oxford New College the previous month ref R. H. Anthems of his were commissioned for the Three Choirs Festivals of 1853 and 1857, and in 1871 he received the honour of knighthood . He died at Windlesham in Surrey on the 9th of December 1893. His works, which are nearly all for the Church, include two oratorio s, a great number of anthems and services, and some pieces for the organ. A memoir of him, by his widow, was published in 1894.
