  1. Ice crystals

File Ice crystals on the box.jpg 250px right thumb Ice crystals Ice crystals are solid ice exhibiting atomic ordering on various length scales and include hexagon al columns, hexagonal plates, Dendrite crystal dendritic crystals , and diamond dust . The highly symmetric shapes are due to depositional growth, namely, direct deposition of water vapour onto the ice crystal. Depending on environmental temperature and humidity, ice crystals can develop from the initial hexagonal prism into numerous symmetric shapes. Possible shapes for ice crystals are columns, needles, plates and dendrites. If the crystal migrates into regions with different environmental conditions, the growth pattern may change, and the final crystal may show mixed patterns. An example are capped columns. Ice crystals tend to fall with their major axis aligned along the horizontal, and are thus visible in polarimetric weather radar signatures with enhanced positive differential reflectivity values. Electrification of ice crystals can induce alignments different from the horizontal. Electrified ice crystals are also well detectable by polarimetric weather radars. Temperature and water vapor humidity determine crystalline forms. Ice crystals are responsible for various Atmosphere atmospheric optics displays. Ice clouds are composed of ice crystals, the most notable being cirrus cloud s and ice fog . The slight whitening of a clear blue sky caused by ice crystals high in the troposphere can be a sign that a weather front and rain is approaching, as moist air is carried to high levels and freezes to ice crystals. Charcot Leyden crystals are slender and pointed at both ends, consisting of a pair of hexagonal pyramids joined at their bases. Normally colorless, they are staining biology stained purplish red by Masson s trichrome trichrome . They consist of lysophospholipase , an enzyme synthesized by eosinophils , and are produced from the breakdown of these cells. Clinical significance They are indicative of a disease involving eosinophilic inflammation or proliferation, such as is found in allergic reactions and parasitic infections. Charcot Leyden crystals are often seen pathologically in patients with bronchial asthma. 1. Acicular (crystal habit)

Image Natroliteinde1.jpg right thumb Natrolite showing acicular crystal habit NOTOC Acicular , in mineralogy , refers to a crystal habit composed of a radiating mass of slender, needle like crystals . Minerals with this habit tend to be fragile and complete, undamaged specimens can be uncommon. Examples Some minerals with an acicular habit include mesolite , natrolite , ref Hamilton, W.R. et al. 1974 The Hamlyn Guide to Minerals, Rocks and Fossils , London, Hamlyn, page 9. ref malachite , gypsum , rutile and brochantite . Differences from other habits Some minerals like creedite form prismatic crystals that appear to be acicular, but are instead prismatic in a bladelike form these can be told apart by the fact that all prismatic crystals are less sharp, sometimes are tipped with a pyramid al shape, and keep a standard cross section shape with straight edges. Acicular crystals differ from fibrous crystals in their thickness crystals with a fibrous habit are much thinner, sometimes to the point of being flexible like hair, while acicular crystals are thicker and rigid. Multiple issues context October 2009 orphan November 2006 unreferenced January 2009 The preferential alignment is a criterion of an orientation of a molecule or atom. The preferential alignment can be related to the formation of the crystal structure of an Amorphous solid amorphous structure. For a polymer material with liquid crystals , the liquid crystals are molecules shaped like rigid rods. Just as logs being floated down a river tend to travel parallel to the direction of the river, liquid crystals have a preferential alignment with each other. At high temperatures, this alignment is disrupted and the material is said to be in the isotropic state. At lower temperatures, the alignment will take place and the liquid crystals are said to be in the pneumatic state Hoong.C.C . 1. Cryo bio-crystallography

Cryo bio crystallography is the application of crystallography at cryogenic temperatures. Basic principles Cryo crystallography enables X ray data collection at cryogenic, near liquid nitrogen temperatures also called N2 . Crystals are transferred from mother liquor to a hydrocarbon environment Crystals are mounted with a glass fiber as opposed to a capillary Crystals are cooled with a cold nitrogen stream on a diffraction apparatus to prevent the solvent freezing in the crystals thus maintaining crystallographic integrity. Advantages Significant improvement of resolution in data collection Reduced or eliminated radiation damage in crystals Usefulness and applications Crystallography of large biological macromolecules can be achieved while maintaining their solution state. Porphyritic is an adjective used in geology , specifically for igneous rock s, for a rock that has a distinct difference in the size of the crystals, with at least one group of crystals obviously larger than another group. ref Dietrich, R. and Skinner, B., 1979, Rocks and Rock Minerals, pg. 108. ref Porphyritic rocks may be aphanite s or extrusive , with large crystals or phenocryst s floating in a fine grained groundmass of non visible crystals, as in a porphyritic basalt , or phanerite s or intrusive , with individual crystals of the groundmass may be easily distinguished with the eye, but one group of crystals clearly much bigger than the rest, as in a porphyritic granite . Most types of igneous rocks may display some degree of porphyritic texture.
