The CUDOS research program has two central themes microphotonics and nonlinear photonics . The goal of achieving ultrahigh speed all optical signal processing on a single Photonic Chip is addressed by combining these two themes to develop micrometre scale photonic components incorporating nonlinear photonics processes. These all optical signal processors will be the key enabling technology for the next generation of ultrahigh bandwidth optical communication systems. The Centre has active research programs in photonic circuitry, microstructured optical fiber s, 2D and 3D photonic crystal s and photonic devices and applications. It has strong programs in nonlinear optical theory, modeling and simulation. Experimental programs include the fabrication of micro structured guided wave optical devices and studies of nonlinear optical effects in periodic guided wave geometries. 1. Mertonian norms

CUDOS is an Acronym and initialism acronym used to denote principles that should guide good scientific research. According to the CUDOS principles, the scientific ethos should be governed by Communalism, Universalism, Disinterestedness, Originality and Skepticism. CUDOS is based on the Mertonian norms introduced in 1942 by Robert K. Merton . ref harvnb Merton 1973 ref Merton described four sets of institutional imperatives comprising the ethos of modern science universalism, communism, disinterestedness, and organized skepticism. These four terms could already be arranged to form CUDOS, but originality was not part of Merton s list. In contemporary academic debate the modified definition outlined below is the most widely used e.g. Ziman 2000 . ref harvnb Ziman 2000 ref Communalism entails that scientific results are the common property of the entire scientific community. Universalism means that all scientists can contribute to science regardless of race, nationality, culture, or gender. Disinterestedness according to which scientists are supposed to act for the benefit of a common scientific enterprise, rather than for personal gain. ref harvnb Godfrey Smith 2003 ref Originality requires that scientific claims contribute something new, whether a new problem, a new approach, new data, a new theory or a new explanation. ref harvnb Ziman 2000 ref Skepticism Organized Skepticism Scientific skepticism Skepticism means that scientific claims must be exposed to critical thinking critical scrutiny before being accepted. The similar sounding term kudos is derived from classical Greek and means fame and renown resulting from an act of achievement and by extension is often used as a praising remark. Counternorms As a balance to the Mertonian norms, the following counter norms are often discussed ref harvnb Mitroff 1974 ref Solitariness secrecy, miserism is often used to keep findings ... 226 30062 7 Category Scientific method fr Ethos de la science lt CUDOS nl CUDOS ...   more details
