Chick culling is the culling of newly hatched male chickens for which breeders have no use. In an industrial egg producing facility, about half of the newly hatched chicks will be male and would grow up to be rooster s, which do not lay eggs and therefore provide no incentive for the breeder to preserve. Most of the male chicks are usually killed shortly after hatching. History Prior to the development of modern meat breeds, most male chickens cockerels would usually be slaughtered for meat, while females pullets would be kept for egg production. However, once farmers bred separate meat and egg breeds, it became apparent that there was no reason to keep males of the egg breed alive. As a result the males of every batch of egg laying chickens would be killed as soon as possible to reduce losses incurred by the breeder through the feeding and sheltering of them. Chicken sexing Special techniques were developed to accurately determine the sex of chicks at as young an age as possible. The culling of unwanted chicks In industrial factory farms , chicks that are not intended for rearing are culled shortly after Chicken sexing their sex is determined , usually before they are 72 hours old. In computer graphics , back face culling determines whether a polygon of a graphical object is visible. It is a step in the graphical pipeline that tests whether the points in the polygon appear in clockwise or counter clockwise order when projected onto the screen. If the user has specified that front facing polygons have a clockwise winding, if the polygon projected on the screen has a counter clockwise winding it has been rotated to face away from the camera and will not be drawn. The process makes Rendering computer graphics rendering objects quicker and more efficient by reducing the number of polygons for the program to draw. For example, in a city street scene, there is generally no need to draw the polygons on the sides of the buildings facing away from the camera they are completely occluded by the sides facing the camera. A related technique is clipping computer graphics clipping , which determines whether polygons are within the camera s field of view at all. Another similar technique is Z culling, also known as Hidden surface determination Occlusion culling occlusion culling , which attempts to skip the drawing of polygons which are covered from the viewpoint by other visible polygons. This technique only works with single sided polygons, which are only visible from one side. Double sided polygons are rendered from both sides, and thus have no back face to cull. One method of implementing back face culling is by discarding all polygons where the dot product of their surface normal and the camera to polygon vector is greater than or equal to zero. Tandem selection is a method of artificial selection in which useful traits are selected for sequentially. For instance, one could select for both increased milk Crop yield yield and increased milk fat content in cow s via tandem selection by first selecting those with the best of one trait, say those that produce highest milk yield, and then when that trait is at a satisfactory level, by starting to select for those cows that produce milk with the greatest milk fat content instead. However, for cows to produce milk with greater fat content, yield may have to go down due to, perhaps, limits of the cows metabolism . So, while you are selecting for cows which have increased milk fat content, the yield of milk they are producing may also go down, thus reversing the selection process previously performed to increase it. Therefore, tandem selection has a major disadvantage to other major types of artificial selection for multiple traits, such as culling and index selection , as there is a tendency for the last trait to be lost as the next is being selected. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Orphan date November 2006 Mesh Subdivision is a technique used to add detail to a polygon mesh by breaking into smaller pieces the polygons in the mesh. Mesh subdivision techniques are often used in 3D computer games, and in other programs such as Google Earth tm . Because computers are limited in the number of polygons they can render per second, different techniques are often used to reduce the number of polygons visible at any given time, while still keeping the image as detailed looking as possible. The polygons usually triangles in the mesh are divided in a way that the ones closest to the viewpoint are much smaller, and the size of the polygons grows the farther they are from the viewpoint. This is a Level Of Detail LOD technique. The mesh starts with a few very large polygons which are divided into smaller and smaller ones as the viewpoint gets closer to them. Polygons will also be recombined when the viewpoint gets farther away, or the polygons are no longer visible see for example View frustum culling . When a polygon is divided altitude and other attributes will be loaded and assigned to the new vertices.
