On My Way to Paradise is a novel by Dave Wolverton and was published in 1989 by Bantam Books . It is set in the far future circa 2300AD depicting a man, Angelo Osic, who is running from an everchanging and frightening world of war and politics. The novel was based on a short story with the same title, which was awarded the L. Ron Hubbard Gold Award at the 1987 Writers of the Future contest. Plot Osic is a morphogenic pharmacologist who tended in a booth in a feria in Gatun city, Panama . He is approached by a stranger, the woman Tamara Marian de la Garza, who requires him to regrow her right hand. The bloody stump on the end of her arm, signifying a traumatic amputation. It transpires that she is on the run from powerful political forces, the assassins of which attempt to kill her and Osic. He flees from the Earth with Tamara who is in an incapacitated state. 1. The Castelles

The Castelles were admired for years as the originators and the epitome of the Philadelphia Sound , which features a high tenor lead, a bass, a seemingly endless supply of tenors in strong harmony, and minimal instrumentation. Listen for it not only in the Castelles, but in those other two contemporary Philadelphia groups, the Dreamers and George Tindley and the Dreams. In spite of its popularity with collectors, however, groups with the Philadelphia Sound only managed to have regional hits, not national ones. George Grant, lead singer of the Castelles, is often thought to be one of the first examples of the very young high tenor sound Fact date May 2008 , that would culminate with Frankie Lymon and his hundreds of imitators. This is not exactly accurate. Although many fans think that George was extremely young at the time of the recordings as did George himself , he was actually 16 when his first record was cut. This was probably the average age for R&B singers at that time. It wasn t the age of the voices that made the Castelles memorable, it was the quality. The Castelles story goes back to around 1949, and the choir at Sulzberger Junior High School in West Philadelphia. Overseen by Miss Joy Goings, it was your average, everyday choir, containing, among others, George Grant Castelles , Billy Taylor Castelles , Octavius Anthony Castelles , Sonny Gordon Angels , George Tindley Dreams , George Pounds Cherokees , Karl English Cherokees , Melvin Story Cherokees , and Solomon Burke . The original members of the Castelles were George Pepi Grant lead tenor , Octavius Anthony first tenor , Billy Taylor first tenor, second tenor, baritone , and Clarence Dunlap bass . They first called themselves the Royal Castelles , a name that George just thought up I liked the name . George s nickname of Pepi was given to him years later by denizens of the poolhall he frequented everyone got a nickname, and, because, with his straightened hair , he looked Spanish, he became Crosstown Pe ...   more details

  1. Trial practice

Legal education in the United States Trial practice is an upper level course offered in most American law school s designed to teach future litigation litigators the fine points of presenting a case to a judge and jury . Unlike most law school courses, a trial practice class has very little discussion of substantive law , and is focused on the practical application of public speaking , narrative , and using body language to communicate a particular set of events to the triers of fact. Trial practice also contains elements of strategy , teaching students how to decide the order in which witnesses should testify, when exhibits should be introduced, and how to trap opposing witnesses into giving testimony that damages their side. evidence law Evidence is the area of substantive law most reinforced by a trial practice course, with students learning how to apply evidence law in a real life setting, including learning when they can object to questions asked of witnesses, what objections to raise, and how to effectively present objections. Trial practice courses may have a classroom component. Also, trial practice courses will usually have an ongoing lab component where an attorney will instruct a small group of students on trial skills and assist them in honing their craft. Often, students practice against one another in mock trial s throughout the course for example, students may be divided into groups of 4, with each group containing two teams who practice against one another in mock trials. Rather than a final exam , the course may culminate in a mock trial with volunteer witnesses . 1. Good-bye, Cruel World

Unreferenced date May 2010 Good bye, Cruel World is a 1983 United States American comedy feature film directed by David Irving director David Irving and starring Dick Shawn and Cynthia Sikes . It was co written by Shawn and Nicholas Niciphor . Plot The film parodies the various gimmicks that were used to get audiences into theatres by claiming to be based on audience choice, although all of the selections are pre selected, and the actual audience response is not measured within the theatre or by choices of the home viewer. The film was sold with images of a man flushing himself down the toilet. The story involves newscaster Rodney Pointsetter Shawn who is so depressed between his job and his family that he tries to make a film about his life, which he intends to culminate with his own suicide. It is often interrupted with irrelevant comic sketches that an emcee Allan Stephan claims that the audience prefers to see. One sketch features Angelique Pettyjohn as a stripping nun , and another Dan Frischman hosting Things Your Parents Used to Say, while Rodney s gay brother, Ainsley, also played by Shawn, stages an opera in his house. 1. Chinese Crime Fiction

In the Song dynasty , the growth of commerce and urban society created a demand for many new forms of popular entertainment. Stories about criminal cases were among the new types of vernacular fiction that developed from the Song to the Ming periods. Written in colloquial rather than literary Chinese, they nearly always featured district magistrates or judges in the higher courts. The plots usually begin with a description of the crime often including much realistic detail of contemporary life and culminate in the exposure of the deed and the punishment of the guilty. Sometimes two solutions to a mystery are posited, but the correct solution is reached through a brilliant judge. The most celebrated hero of such tales was Judge Bao Zheng , or Dragon Plan Bao, who was originally based on a historical person. Featuring in hundreds of stories, Bao became the archetype of the incorruptible official in a society in which miscarriages of justice in favor of the rich and powerful were all too common. Not all crime stories have happy endings, and some were evidently written with the aim of exposing the brutal methods of corrupt judges who often after accepting bribes extracted false confessions by torture and condemned innocent people to death. In some tales, the crimes are exposed with the aid of supernatural forces, but others display features common in Western crime fiction. For example, in one tale the dimwitted investigator is upstaged by the patient and methodical investigation of his junior. It consists of 14 poems alphabetised from A to N. The number of lines of each poem is determined by the Fibonacci number s poem A has one line, while poem N has 600. Reception The book was reviewed in Publishers Weekly in 2001 As used here with controlled repetitions, the Fibonacci sequence gives the whole an almost medieval sense of restriction . Abstracted cold war fears and post 70s ecological concern and alienation give way to litanies of real world outrages ... which culminate in a post nuclear holocaust nightmare, with birds and children somehow having survived in caves. The scenario may seem dated, but the threats remain very real, and Christensen s poetic appeal for sanity and humanity remains an abstracted call to action. ref Cite web author Staff writer date 2001 05 14 url http www.publishersweekly.com 978 0 8112 1477 3 title Fiction Review Alphabet by Inger Christensen work Publishers Weekly accessdate 2012 02 13 ref See also 1981 in poetry Danish literature References reflist Category 1981 books Category Danish books Category Works by Inger Christensen Category Poetry collections Poetry stub ...   more details
