About the concept of culturalpluralism other uses of the term Pluralism disambiguation Culturalpluralism is a term used when smaller groups within a larger society maintain their unique cultural identities, and their values and practices are accepted by the wider culture provided they are consistent with the laws and values of the wider society. Culturalpluralism is often confused with Multiculturalism. Multiculturalism lacks the requirement for a dominant culture. One example is the United States which has a relative strong dominant culture which includes strong elements of nationalism, a sporting culture and an artistic culture. In a pluralist culture, unique groups not only co exist side by side, but also consider qualities of other groups as traits worth having in the dominant culture. A successful pluralistic society will place strong expectations of integration on its members rather than expectations of assimilation. A society that lacks a strong dominant culture can easily pass practicing culturalpluralism to multiculturalism without any intentional steps being taken by that society. The existence of such institutions and practices is possible if the cultural communities are accepted by the larger society in a pluralist culture and sometimes require the protection of the law. Often the acceptance of a culture may require that the new or minority culture remove some aspects of their culture which is incompatible with the laws or values of the dominant culture. About the concept of legal pluralism other uses of the term Pluralism disambiguation Legal pluralism is the existence of multiple legal system s within one geographic area. Plural legal systems are particularly prevalent in former colonies , where the law of a former colonial authority may exist alongside more traditional legal systems. When these systems developed, the idea was that certain issues e.g., commercial law commercial transactions would be covered by colonial law, while other issues e.g., family law family and marriage would be covered by traditional law. Over time, these distinctions tended to break down and individuals would choose to bring their legal claims under the system that they thought would offer them the best advantage. Legal pluralism also occurs when different laws govern different groups within a country. For example, in India and Tanzania , there are special Islamic courts that address concerns in Muslim communities by following Sharia Islamic law principles. Secular courts deal with the issues of other communities. Structural pluralism represents the extent to which the community has an open and inclusive structure that permits minority voices and opinions to be heard when citizens and citizen groups are addressing community problems Young, 1999 . Communities are discussed in terms of having common institutions, such as governing or other political bodies, religious, educational and economic institutions. These bodies or institutions help to maintain the social order within the community. In such a condition, most of the country is moderate or moderate leaning left wing or right wing. If the country becomes polarized, then the curve becomes one with two main humps and looks like a bimodal distribution , with the power at the far political left and political right right ends, and a severe dip in the middle one side will have more influence than the other, creating a strong trend to follow them. There is speculation that a nation with such a distribution, effectively having two highly separate approaches with no compromise positions in the middle, becomes difficult to govern. Judaism Religious pluralism is a set of religious world views that hold that one s religion is not the sole and exclusive source of truth, and thus recognizes that some level of truth and value exists in other religions. As such, religious pluralism goes beyond religious tolerance, which is the condition of peaceful existence between adherents of different religions or religious denominations. Within the Jewish community there lies a common history, a shared language of prayer, a shared Bible and a shared set of rabbinic literature , thus allowing for Jews of significantly different world views to share some common values and goals. Classical Jewish views General classical views on other religions Traditionally, Jews believe that God chose the Jewish people to be in a Jews as a chosen people unique covenant with God , described by the Torah itself, with particular obligations and responsibilities elucidated in the Oral Torah .
