  1. Surface lure

Unreferenced date March 2007 Image Australian bass 3.jpg thumb 300px right This fine Australian bass was caught and released on a fizzer equipped with barbless hooks. A surface lure is a fishing fishing lure lure designed to waddle, pop, lock, drop, pulse, twitch or fizz across the surface of the water as it is retrieved, and in doing so imitate surface prey for fish such as mice, lizards, frogs, cicadas, moths and small injured fish. A typical surface lure has a solid body made out of wood or plastic, carries one or two Fish hook treble hook s, and has an eyelet at the front of the lure body to attach the fishing line . Waddlers get their action from a scooped metal dish attached to the front of the lure body. Sea Fishing Poppers Poppers get their action from a cupped face carved or molded into the front of the lure body. Fizzers get their action both from the fisherman manipulating the lure with the fishing rod and from one or more blades attached to the lure body, that spin when the lure is pulled and create a fizzing noise said to imitate the buzzing wings of a drowning insect. Sizeable fish can create a sudden, noisy and spectacular explosion when they take a surface lure, usually giving the fisherman a fright in the process. Catching fish on surface lures is therefore considered a fairly exciting form of fishing. fishing rod topics fisheries and fishing DEFAULTSORT Surface Lure Category Recreational fishing Category Fishing equipment fishing stub ...   more details

  1. Rotation of ammunition

refimprove date October 2010 Rotation of ammunition is a term used with reference to gun s. Projectile s intended for R.M.L. rifled muzzle loading gun rifled muzzle loading guns were at first fitted with a number of gunmetal gun metal studs arranged around them in a spiral manner corresponding to the twist of rifling . This was defective, as it allowed, as in the old smooth bore guns, the powder gas to escape by the clearance called windage between the projectile and the bore, with a consequent loss of efficiency it also quickly eroded the bore of the larger guns. Later the rotation was effected by a cupped copper disc called a gas check attached to the base end of the projectile. The powder gas pressure expanded the rim of the gas check into the rifling grooves and prevented the escape of gas it also firmly fixed the gas check to the projectile, thus causing it to rotate. A more regular and efficient action of the powder gas was thus ensured, with a corresponding greater range and an improvement in accuracy. With the earlier Armstrong R.B.L. or rifled breech loading guns rifled breech loading guns the projectiles were coated with lead the late Lord Armstrong s system , the lead being forced through the rifling grooves by the pressure of the exploded powder gas. The lead coating is, however, too soft with the higher velocities of modern B.L. guns. Vavasseur devised the plan of fitting by hydraulic pressure a copper driving band into a groove cut around the body of the projectile. This is now universal. It not only fulfills the purpose of rotating the projectile, but renders possible the use of large explosive charge charges of slow burning explosive . The copper band, on being forced through the gun, gives rise to considerable friction resistance , which allows the propelling charge to burn properly and thus to exert its enormous force on the projectile. The laws which govern projectile designs are not well defined. Certain formulae are used which give the thickness ...   more details

  1. Beltweigher

refimprove date August 2010 A beltweigher or belt weigher is a piece of industrial control system control equipment used to gauge the mass or flow rate of material travelling over a troughed cupped conveyor belt of any length which is able to adequately contain the material being weighed. These are also known as belt scales, dynamic scales, conveyor scales, and in motion weighers. Many such check weigher s or feed weighers are an active part of the process flow control of the conveyor line. A belt weigher replaces a short section of the support mechanism of the belt, which might be one or more sets of idler rollers, or a short section of channel or plate. This weighed support is mounted on load cell s, either pivoted, counterbalanced or not, or fully suspended. The mass measured by the load cells is integral integrated with the belt speed to compute the mass of material moving on the belt, after allowing for the mass of the belt itself. Belt weighers generally include the necessary electronics to perform this calculation, often in the form of a small industrialized microprocessor system. A belt weigher is normally mounted in a well supported straight section of belt, with no vertical or sideways curvature, and as close to level as is practicable. The weighed support must be aligned vertically and horizontally with the adjacent supports to avoid tensile forces in the belt skewing the measurement. Due the belt tension variation, frequent check calibration must be done. Outputs from belt weighers are typically pulses at predefined increments of mass an analog signal analogue signal proportional to the flow rate In addition, some belt weigher controllers will offer features such as driving an output to stop the belt when a predefined mass of material has been measured, or a range of alarms to indicate nil flow, belt slippage and belt stoppage. Uses include mineral and aggregate extraction, continuous mixing processes, control of variable rate feeder s, port handling and ...   more details

  1. Hand-stopping

Hand stopping is a technique by which a natural horn can be made to produce notes outside of its normal Harmonic series music harmonic series . By inserting the hand, cupped, into the bell, the player can reduce the pitch of a note by a semitone or more. This, combined with the use of Crook music crook s changing the key of the instrument, allowed composers to write fully chromatic music for the horn before the invention of piston and valve horns in the early 19th Century. The technique was invented in Europe in the mid 18th Century, and its first celebrated exponent was Giovanni Punto , who learned the technique from A. J. Hampel and subsequently taught it to the Court orchestra of George III . In addition to the change in pitch, the timbre is changed, sounding somewhat muted. Some pieces call for notes to be played stopped sometimes written as gestopft in the score specifically in order to produce this muted tone. This can clearly be heard on recordings of natural horns playing baroque repertoire such as the Carl Maria von Weber Weber Weber concertino for horn concertino a recording by Anthony Halstead and the Hanover Band is available which demonstrates this to particularly good effect . The pitch control is affected by the degree of closing the bell with the right hand. As the palm closes the bell, the effective tube length is increased, lowering the pitch up to about a semitone for horns in the range D through G . But when the hand stops the bell completely, the tube length is shortened, raising pitch about a semitone for horns tuned near to the key of F. 1. Open-hand strikes

Open hand strikes include various techniques used in the martial arts to attack or defend without curling the hand into a fist. The most famous of these techniques is probably the so called karate chop , which is also described as a knife hand strike shuto uke although there are many other techniques. Some of these are techniques that use the edge of the hand closest to the little finger or use the opposite edge of the hand A knife hand strike may be delivered along an arc somewhere midway been vertical and horizontal, usually with the aim of numbing an attacker s forearm. techniques that use the other edge of the hand are more difficult to execute since care has to be taken to position the thumb so that it will not be injured. Performing this move in a way that is powerful will generally involve striking with the palm facing down. And so doing will mean that, e.g., the person using this strike will attack the left side of his opponent s body with the right knife hand, or vice versa . spear hand attacks are performed by keeping the extended fingers tightly compressed together and thrusting directly into some target of relatively small diameter, such as the throat. In many types of karate it is referred to as a nukite . the back of the hand, with the fingers loosely curled, can be used in an upward arcing strike to the groin . the cupped hands can be used in unison to attack the ears, potentially damaging the opponent s eardrums. the heel of the hand can be used to strike a target without fear of damaging the knuckles. This is referred to in Okinawan styles as a Teisho or Shotei strike. One of the greatest advantages of an open hand strike is the ability to quickly grab the opponent to perform a follow up, such as a throw or a pull into another strike. The extra control this affords as compared to a punch is worth the larger risk of damage to the hand or fingers. Category Martial art techniques martialart stub ja ...   more details
