The Boeotian helmet was a type of helmet that was used in Classical Antiquity and the Hellenistic period and possibly originated in Boeotia . It was an open helmet, allowing good peripheral vision and unimpaired hearing, though its flaring brim was worked into downward pointing folds affording some protection to the face. The need for unimpeded vision and good hearing was particularly acute for cavalrymen, therefore this type of helmet was used primarily by mounted troops. The Athenian military expert and author Xenophon particularly recommended the Boeotian helmet for cavalry, a piece of advice taken up by Alexander the Great . ref Anderson, J.K, 1961 Ancient Greek Horsemanship , Berkeley and Los Angeles. pp. 147 148. ref As a specialised cavalry helmet its use was not as widespread as other ancient helmets such as the Corinthian helmet Corinthian or Phrygian cap Phrygian types.
