  1. Cycles per instruction

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 In computer architecture , cycles per instruction aka clock cycles per instruction , clocks per instruction , or CPI is a term used to describe one aspect of a central processing unit processor s performance the number of clock cycle s that happen when an Instruction computer science instruction is being executed. It is the multiplicative inverse of instructions per cycle . Explanation Let us assume a classic RISC pipeline , with the following 5 stages Instruction fetch cycle IF Instruction decode Register fetch cycle ID Execution Effective address cycle EX Memory access MEM Write back cycle WB Each stage requires one clock cycle and an instruction passes through the stages sequentially. Without pipelining , a new instruction is fetched in stage 1 only after the previous instruction finishes at stage 5. Therefore without pipelining the number of cycles it takes to execute an instruction is 5. This is the definition of CPI. With pipelining we can improve the CPI by exploiting instruction level parallelism . For example, what if an instruction ... 1. Long-cycles

Cleanup date June 2008 Economic Waves There has been some confusion between the terms long cycle and long waves . Long waves date back to Nikolai Kondratieff , the Russian economist whose name now represents the cycles that he expounded on, that is the Kondratieff Waves . Long cycles properly belongs to Simon Kuznets , the second American to win the Nobel Prize in economics , the first being Paul Samuelson . Long cycles, also known as long swings, originally referred to the cycles that Kuznets expounded on, now known as Kuznets cycles or simply Kuznets. With much confusion about these terms over the last 30 years, long cycles is used almost interchangeably to refer to long waves by economists, sociologists and writers alike and few really know the difference. While Kondratieff s long waves were thought to be about 50 to 60 years long, Kuznets cycles are much shorter, based on his work with mid 19th and early 20th century demographics. Edward Cheung, author of Baby Boomers, Generation X and Social Cycles , suggests that both these cycles are based on demographics and that they do not contradict each other, but complement each other. 1. Cycles of the Kings

The Cycles of the Kings , also known as the Kings Cycles or the Historical Cycle are a body of Old and Middle Irish literature . They contain stories of the legendary kings of Ireland, for example Cormac mac Airt , Niall of the Nine Hostages , ogan M r , Conall Corc , Guaire Aidne mac Colm in , Diarmait mac Cerbaill , Lugaid mac Con , Conn of the Hundred Battles , L egaire mac N ill , Crimthann mac Fidaig , and Brian B ruma . It was part of the duty of the medieval Irish bards, or court Irish poetry poets , to record the history of the family and the genealogy of the king they served. This they did in poems that blended the mythological and the historical to a greater or lesser degree. The resulting stories form what has come to be known as the Historical Cycle, or more correctly Cycles, as there are a number of independent groupings. The kings that are included range from the almost entirely mythological Labraid Loingsech , who allegedly became High King of Ireland around 431 BC, to the entirely historical Brian Boru. However, the greatest glory of the Historical Cycle is the Buile Shuibhne The Frenzy of Sweeney , a 12th century tale told in verse and prose. Suibhne, king of D l nAraidi , was cursed by St Ronan and became a kind of half man, half bird, condemned to live out his life in the woods, fleeing from his human companions. The story has captured the imaginations of contemporary Irish poets and has been translated by Trevor Joyce and Seamus Heaney .
