Image Cyclone separator.svg thumb 200px A simple cyclone separator Cyclonicseparation is a method of removing particulate s from an air, gas or liquid stream, without the use of filter air filter s, through vortex separation. Rotation al effects and gravity are used to separate mixtures of solids and fluids. The method can also be used to separate fine droplets of liquid from a gaseous stream. A high speed rotating air flow is established within a cylindrical or conical container called a cyclone . Air flows in a helical pattern, beginning at the top wide end of the cyclone and ending at the bottom narrow end before exiting the cyclone in a straight stream through the center of the cyclone and out the top. Larger denser particles in the rotating stream have too much inertia to follow the tight curve of the stream, and strike the outside wall, then falling to the bottom of the cyclone where they can be removed. In a conical system, as the rotating flow moves towards the narrow end of the cyclone, the rotational radius of the stream is reduced, thus separating smaller and smaller particles. Image irrigcyclone.gif thumb right 250 px Figure 1 Irrigated cyclone scrubber Cyclonic spray scrubbers are an air pollution control technology. They use the features of both the cyclonicseparation dry cyclone and the spray tower spray chamber to remove pollutants from gas streams. Generally, the inlet gas enters the chamber tangentially, swirls through the chamber in a corkscrew motion, and exits. At the same time, liquid is sprayed inside the chamber. As the gas swirls around the chamber, pollutant s are removed when they impact on liquid droplets, are thrown to the walls, and washed back down and out. Cyclonic scrubbers are generally low to medium energy devices, with pressure drop s of 4 to 25 cm 1.5 to 10 in of water. Commercially available designs include the irrigated cyclone scrubber and the cyclonic spray scrubber . In the irrigated cyclone Figure 1 , the inlet gas enters near the top of the wet scrubber scrubber into the water sprays. The gas is forced to swirl downward, then change directions, and return upward in a tighter spiral. The liquid droplets produced capture the pollutants, are eventually thrown to the side walls, and carried out of the collector. The cleaned gas leaves through the top of the chamber. A weak inverted wave in the Trade wind easterlies is generally found beneath it, and it may also be associated with broad areas of high level clouds. Downward development results in an increase of cumulus clouds and the appearance of Atmospheric circulation circulation at ground level. In rare cases, a warm core cyclone can develop in its associated convective activity, resulting in a tropical cyclone and a weakening and southwest movement of the nearby upper tropospheric cyclonic vortex. Symbiotic relationships can exist between tropical cyclones and the upper level Low pressure area low s in their wake, with the two systems occasionally leading to their mutual strengthening. A trial separation is an informal splitting of a couple. Unlike legal separation , this is purely a personal arrangement and does not require legal proceedings. The couple can choose later to go through with a divorce or can choose to stay married. A trial separation may allow the spouse who wants the divorce to experience some of the feelings of being separated without making a final decision to divorce. The main advantage of a trial separation, of course, is that it s easily reversible. Unreferenced date June 2007 Separation masters are a method of long term preservation for most modern color motion picture film . Since monopack color film used in such processes as Eastman Color Negative ECN , Eastman Color Positive ECP and their successive revisions contains photographically active color couplers which remain in the film after development, the emulsion will continue to produce chemical reactions in the image which cumulatively create a color fading, usually heavily biased towards the pink spectrum. In order to protect against this occurrence, the technique of separation masters was created. Separation mastering is essentially an inversion of the Technicolor three strip system, which used filtration to create three black and white masters each sensitized for one of the RGB spectrums and then printed the negatives with a CMYK colorspace. In separation mastering, the original camera negative is used to create three black and white copies, each one filtered for one of the RGB spectrums. The black and white process is considered inert after development and thus should be more stable for long term archival, preservation, and restoration although the film base may eventually decay regardless . Multiple issues wikify November 2010 onesource November 2010 In statistics separation is a phenomenon associated with models for dichotomous or categorical outcomes, including logistic regression logistic and probit regression . Separation occurs if the predictor or a linear combination of some subset of the predictors is associated with only one outcome value when the predictor is greater than some constant. For example, if the predictor X is continuous, and the outcome y     1 for all observed x     2. If the outcome values are perfectly determined by the predictor e.g., y     0 when x     2 then the condition complete separation is said to obtain. If instead there is some overlap e.g., y     0 when x     2, but y has observed values of 0 and 1 when x     2 then quasi complete separation obtains. A 2  ×   2 table with an empty cell is an example of quasi complete separation. This observed form of the data is important because it causes problems with estimated regression coefficients. Loosely, a parameter in the model wants to be infinite, if complete is observed. If quasi complete separation is the case, the likelihood is maximized at a very large but not infinite value for that parameter. Computer programs will often output an arbitrarily large parameter estimate with a very large standard error. Methods to fit these models include exact logistic regression and Firth logistic regression , a bias reduction method based on a penalized likelihood. References Albert, A. and Anderson, J.A. 1984 .
