The 12 volume UniversalCyclopaedia was edited by Charles Kendall Adams , and was published by D. Appleton & Company in 1900. The name was changed to UniversalCyclopaedia and Atlas in 1902, with editor Rossiter Johnson . History The UniversalCyclopaedia was derived from the 1893 Johnson s UniversalCyclopaedia , also edited by Charles Kendall Adams , and published in 8 volumes by Alvin J. Johnson & Co. . D. Appleton & Company acquired the rights to Johnson s UniversalCyclopaedia , and the imprints of both companies appeared on volumes of Johnson s UniversalCyclopaedia and on the 1900 edition of the UniversalCyclopaedia . From 1901 only Appleton s imprint appeared, and the set was often referred to as Appleton s UniversalCyclopaedia . Johnson s UniversalCyclopaedia in turn was a revision of the 1876 Johnson s New UniversalCyclopaedia , which was published in 4 volumes by Alvin J. Johnson & Co., and edited by Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard Frederick Barnard and Arnold Henry Guyot Arnold Guyot . The 4 volumes were split to produce an 8 volume edition in 1884. In the Publisher s Announcement in Volume I, A. J. Johnson stated that Horace Greeley suggested the plan for the work and urged its publication, and was a primary advisor. Greeley is listed as an associate editor. One of Greeley s requirements was that the cyclopaedia be pre eminently a book of facts, and to a very limited extent, if at all, a volume of discussions or of critical opinions. There was some protest against the depiction of Catholic doctrine and practices in the UniversalCyclopaedia and Atlas . ref cite web url http siris libraries.si.edu ipac20 ipac.jsp?session 1R206580Q85Q4.21994&profile liball&uri link 3100009 908589 3100001 3100002&aspect subtab103&menu search&ri 2&source silibraries&term Appletons 27 universal cyclopedia and atlas.&index title A chapter of errors in Appleton s universalcyclopaedia and atlas an article entitled Poisoning the wells reprinted from The Messenger author Wynne ... more details

An Universal Etymological English Dictionary was a dictionary compiled by Nathan Bailey or Nathaniel Bailey and first published in London in 1721 . It was the most popular English dictionary of the eighteenth century. As an indicator of its popularity it reached its 20th edition in 1763 ref The 20th edition of Bailey s Dictionary, dated 1763, is downloadable at http www.archive.org details universaletymolo00bail Archive.org . ref and its 27th edition in 1794. ref Reported by librarian Philip N. Cronenwett, year 1997, at http www.dartmouth.edu library Library Bulletin Nov1997 Cronenwett.html Dartmouth.edu Library Bulletin , who also reports that in the 18th century Bailey s dictionary was almost universally accepted as the dictionary of choice . ref Its last edition 30th was in 1802. It was a little over 900 pages long. In compiling his dictionary, Bailey borrowed greatly from John Kersey s Dictionarium Anglo Britannicum 1706 , which in turn drew from the later editions of Edward Phillips s The New World of English Words . Like Kersey s dictionary, Bailey s dictionary was one of the first monolingual English dictionaries to focus on defining words in common usage, rather than just difficult words. In 1727, Bailey published a second volume entitled The Universal Etymological English Dictionary, Volume II , which coexisted alongside the original volume, and was a supplement to it. Volume II, almost 900 pages, has some duplication or overlap with the original volume, but mostly consists of extra words of lesser circulation. It was not as popular as the original volume. The UniversalDictionary of Violin & Bow Makers is a widely cited reference work providing information on approximately 9,000 violin makers. The work is based on the extensive notes of violinist and composer William Henley October 27, 1882 1957 . Henley had in his youth studied with August Wilhelmj , and later became a professor of composition and principal of the violin at the Royal Academy in London. Having played violins from a large number of manufacturers, Henley sought to compile of a comprehensive list evaluating violin and bow makers. After Henley s death, in 1957, dealer Cyril Woodcock completed and published the work based on Henley s unfinished notes. The work was first published in five volumes in 1959 and 1960, and republished in a single volume in 1973.
