Incomplete date January 2010 File Graduated cylinders diagrams.svg upright thumb right A graduated cylinder , measuring cylinder or graduate is a piece of laboratory equipment used to accurately measure the volume of a liquid. Water displacement can be used to find out the volume of a solid. Graduated cylinders are generally more accurate and precise for this purpose than Laboratory flask flasks and beaker glassware beakers . Often, the largest graduated cylinders are made of polypropylene for its excellent chemical resistance or polymethylpentene for its transparency, making them lighter and less fragile than glass. Polypropylene is easy to repeatedly autoclave however, autoclaving in excess of about convert 130 C depending on the chemical formulation typical commercial grade polypropylene melts in excess of convert 160 C ,can warp or damage polypropylene graduated cylinders, affecting accuracy. 1. Cylinder 1024

Cylinder 1024 is the first cylinder disk drive cylinder of a hard disk that was inaccessible in the original IBM PC compatible hardware specification, INT 13H interrupt 13h , which uses cylinder head sector addressing. At boot time very old BIOS of many PCs could only access the first 1024 cylinders, numbered 0 to 1023 as CHS addressing only defines 10 bits for the cylinder count 2 10 1024 . This was a problem for operating system s on the x86 platform as the BIOS must be able to load the bootloader and the entire kernel computer science kernel image into memory. Both of these must, therefore, be located on the first 1024 cylinders of the disk. Older versions of Microsoft Windows resolved this by necessitating that the operating system was installed to the first partition. Because of this bug, users of the Linux operating system have traditionally created a tt boot tt partition to reside within the first 1024 cylinders of the disk, containing little more than the Kernel computer science kernel and bootloader. 1. Cylinder desk

The cylinder desk is a desk that resembles a Bureau Mazarin or a writing table equipped with small stacked shelves in front of the user s main work surface, and a revolving cylinder part that comes down to hide and lock up the working papers when the desk is not in use. File Cylinder desk David Roentgen M nchner Residenz DSC07473.JPG thumb 300px Like the rolltop desk , which was invented much later, the cylinder desk usually has a fixed work surface the paperwork does not have to be stored before the desk is shut. Some designs, however, have the capacity to slide the desk surface out a few inches to expand the available work area. The cylinder desk is also called bureau Kaunitz , as it was allegedly introduced in France in the first half of the 18th century by Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz , then the ambassador of the Habsburg Habsburg Empire to the French court. Regardless of the authenticity of its origin, the French court adopted this type of desk with great enthusiasm. The difficulty of producing wooden cylinder sections which would not warp over the years ensured that such desks were reserved for the rich and the very rich. A few variants of this form have slats instead of a one piece cylinder section. 1. Bubbler cylinder

A Bubbler cylinder is a component of a unit for the chemical vapor deposition metal organic chemical vapor deposition MOCVD . They are devices that are used for conveying electronic grade organometallic chemistry metalorganic compound s from a liquid or solid precursor into a usable vapor . Apparatus The container of the Bubblers is similar to the construction of a gas washing bottle and used for the protected storage of metalorganic compounds to exclude air oxygen , moisture . The bubbler has a supply pipe and a sampling tube. The inlet tube ends just before the bottom of the tube. In this tube, an inert gas is introduced, which bubbles through the liquid chemical a solid chemical will Sublimation phase transition sublime . The mixture of the controlled inert gas and the vaporized chemical leaves the cylinder into a downstream reaction vessel. The temperature is controlled by a thermostat, so that a defined, constant steam pressure can be achieved. The supply of the often expensive and sensitive chemical is controlled by the regulated flow of inert gas and the temperature of the bubbler, resulting in a given vapor pressure of the chemical. The tube between the bubbler and the reactor has to have a higher temperature than the bubble, otherwise the precursor would condensation condense in the tube and therefore uncontrolled droplets would be passed into the reaction vessel. If this happens with a solid precursor, it could plug the line. Application For example, during the production of high brightness light emitting diode s, gallium or other group III V elements are epitaxially deposited onto a single crystal silicon substrate. The gallium is introduced into the MOVPE reactor chamber via a vapor. 1. Trivial cylinder

Unreferenced date January 2010 In geometry and topology , trivial cylinders are certain pseudoholomorphic curve s appearing in certain cylindrical manifold s. In Floer homology and its variants, chain complexes or differential graded algebras are generated by certain combinations of closed orbits of vector fields . In symplectic Floer homology, one considers the Hamiltonian vector field of a Hamiltonian function on a symplectic manifold in symplectic field theory , contact homology , and their variants, one considers the Reeb vector field associated to a contact form , or more generally a stable Hamiltonian structure . The differentials all count some flavor of pseudoholomorphic curve s in a manifold with a cylindrical almost complex structure whose ends at negative infinity are the given collection of closed orbits. For instance, in symplectic Floer homology, one considers the product of the mapping torus of a symplectomorphism with the real numbers in symplectic field theory, one considers the symplectization of a contact manifold. The product of a given embedded closed orbit with R is always a pseudoholomorphic curve, and such a curve is called a trivial cylinder . Trivial cylinders do not generally contribute to the aforementioned differentials, but they may appear as components of more complicated curves which do.
