  1. Donncoirce

Donncoirce or Donn Corci was probably king of D l Riata until his death in 792. Donncoirce s death, the only report of his existence, appears in the Annals of Ulster for the year 791, corresponding with 792 AD. In it he is called Donncoirce, king of D l Riata. Donncoirce is not listed as a king in the Synchronisms of Flann Mainistrech , or in the Duan Albanach , nor does he appear under this name in any surviving genealogies . Likewise, he was not a king of the D l nAraidi misreported as a king of D l Riata, or otherwise associated with Ireland , as proposed by John Bannerman. Alan Orr Anderson suggested that the name Donncoirce may be a byname, perhaps meaning Brown Oats . Donncoirce is the last king of D l Riata so called by surviving Irish annals . Dauvit Broun s reconstruction of the late D l Riata kings places the beginning of Donncoirce s reign at the death of Fergus mac Echdach in 781 or 782. 1. Fergus mac Echdach

Fergus mac Echdach was king of D l Riata modern western Scotland from about 778 until 781. He succeeded ed Find . He is stated to have been a son of Eochaid mac Echdach , and thus a brother of ed. Some much later sources make him a son of ed, but this is not credited by modern studies. His death is noticed in 781 by the Annals of Ulster . The next reported king of D l Riata is Donncoirce . 1. Eochaid mac Echdach

Eochaid mac Eochaid was king of D l Riata modern western Scotland from 726 until 733. He was a son of Eochaid mac Domangairt . Eochaid came to power as king of D l Riata in 726, presumably deposing D ngal mac Selbaig . Selbach mac Ferchair Selbach may have tried to restore his son to power, and fought against Eochaid s supporters at Irros Foichnae in 727, but without apparent success. The annals vary as to whether the despatch of a fleet from D l Riata to Ireland to aid Flaithbertach mac Loingsig in his war with ed All n should be placed in the reign of Eochaid, or that of his successor. At his death in 733, Eochaid is named king rather than lord of D l Riata, which may suggest that after the defeat of D ngal and Selbach his reign was unchallenged. His son, ed Find , was later king of D l Riata. As D l Riata certainly maintained a separate existence until 736, Eochaid must have had a successor, or successors. It appears that he was succeeded by Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig , who had replaced D ngal mac Selbaig as king of the Cen l Loairn . 1. Eógan mac Muiredaig

E gan mac Muiredaig is named in some Scotland Scots sources as a king of D l Riata , probably in the 730s. Presumed to be the son of Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig , and thus a king of the Cen l Loairn , E gan is not named in any surviving Irish annals , nor does he appear in the Duan Albanach , which passes from Muiredach to ed Find . The Chronicle of the Kings of D l Riata names E gan son of Muiredach as king after Muiredach, and the king list in the Chronicle of Melrose includes him. Later genealogies of the Mormaer of Moray Mormaers of Moray trace their descent from the Cen l Loairn through one Ruadr , a presumed brother of E gan s father. E gan s reign falls in the period when D l Riata was invaded and conquered by the Picts under engus I of the Picts engus mac Fergusa . The name of his successor is unknown, and the next king to appear in the record is ed Find of the Cen l nGabr in , some three decades after E gan s time. 1. Eochaid mac Domangairt

Eochaid mac Domangairt died ca. 697 was a king of D l Riata modern western Scotland in about 697. He was a member of the Cen l nGabr in , the son of Domangart mac Domnaill and father of Eochaid mac Echdach Alp n mac Echdach may also be a son of this Eochaid. He is named in D l Riata king lists, the Duan Albanach and the Synchronisms of Flann Mainistrech . In some sources he is called Eochaid Crook Nose Riannamail , but modern readings take this is a being a garbled reference to Fiannamail ua D nchado rather than an epithet . The killing of Eochu nepos Domnaill , Eochaid grandson of Domnall Brecc , is reported in the Annals of Ulster for 697. Eochaid mac eda Find is a spurious fact date December 2011 King of D l Riata found in some rare Scotland in the High Middle Ages High Medieval king lists and in older history books. Supposedly a son of ed Find died 778 and successor to ed s brother Fergus mac Echdach , Eochaid is now thought to represent a misplacing of the reign of Eochaid mac Echdach . The reigns of Selbach mac Ferchair , D ngal mac Selbaig and, perhaps, Alp n mac Echdach , are similarly misplaced in the sources which contain this Eochaid. 1. Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig

Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig was king of the Cen l Loairn , and of D l Riata modern western Scotland , from about 733 until 736. He was the son of Ainbcellach mac Ferchair . His coming to power is reported in 733, and is not obviously associated with the death of Eochaid mac Echdach , king of D l Riata, in the Irish annals . It is not certain who preceded Muiredach as king of the Cen l Loairn, but it may have been his cousin D ngal mac Selbaig . Muiredach is one of the kings named in the 11th century praise poem Duan Albanach . It is likely that his reign ended as a result of his defeat at the hands of the Picts of Fortriu , led by Talorgan mac Fergusa, brother of engus I of the Picts engus , at Cnoc Cairpri in Calathros at Etarlinde . The battle is recorded by the Annals of Ulster , but Muiredach s death is not. The independent existence of the kingdom of the Cen l Loairn, and that of D l Riata, probably ended in 736, after which time it formed part of the kingdom of the Picts , ruled by engus I of the Picts engus mac Fergusa . The next king of D l Riata reported by the Irish annals is ed Find , of the Cen l nGabr in, named in 768. Some Scottish sources, including the Chronicle of Melrose , have Muiredach s son E gan mac Muiredaig E gan as his successor. An entry in the Annals of the Four Masters under the year 771 corresponding with about 776  AD, but perhaps as late as 778  AD since the death of ed Find appears in the same year reports Muiredach s death. 1. Ainbcellach mac Ferchair

Ainbcellach mac Ferchair was king of the Cen l Loairn of D l Riata , and perhaps of all D l Riata, from 697 until 698, when he was deposed and exiled to Ireland . He was a son of Ferchar Fota . He is given the epithet the Good in the Duan Albanach , a praise poem from the 11th century. It is unclear how long he remained in exile. There are reports of fighting in D l Riata in the early 8th century which might be a conflict between Ainbcellach and his brother, Selbach mac Ferchair , or between the Cen l Loairn and the Cen l nGabr in for control of D l Riata. Ainbcellach had certainly returned by September 719, when he was killed fighting against Selbach in Finnglen perhaps near Loch Fyne . Ainbcellach s son Muiredach mac Ainbcellaig Muiredach was later king of the Cen l Loairn. The later Mormaer of Moray Mormaers of Moray traced their descent to Ainbcellach and the Cen l Loairn through Ainbcellach s son Ruadr . 1. Ferchar Fota

Ferchar Fota Ferchar the Tall died c. 697 was probably king of the Cen l Loairn of D l Riata , and perhaps of all D l Riata. His father is named as Feredach mac Fergusa and he was said to be a descendant in the 6th generation of Loarn mac Eirc . Ferchar is first reported in the Annals of Tigernach in 678, when he led the Cen l Loairn to defeat on Tiree against the Britons , presumably those of Kingdom of Strathclyde Alt Clut . The battle is also reported by the Annals of Ulster , but Ferchar is not named. The second report of Ferchar is that of his death in 697. Ferchar may have been king of D l Riata from the 670s &mdash the Duan Albanach assigns him a reign of 21 years &mdash or he may have become king of D l Riata only on the death of Domnall Donn in 696. His sons Ainbcellach mac Ferchair Ainbcellach and Selbach mac Ferchair Selbach were kings of D l Riata and his descendants included Macbeth of Scotland Mac Bethad mac Findl ich William Shakespeare Shakespeare s Macbeth . citation needed date August 2010 References Alan Orr Anderson Anderson, Alan Orr , Early Sources of Scottish History A.D 500&ndash 1286 , volume 1. 1. Domangart mac Domnaill

Domangart mac Domnaill died 673 was a king in D l Riata modern western Scotland and the son of Domnall Brecc . It is not clear whether he was over king of D l Riata or king of the Cen l nGabr in . Domangart is not listed by the Duan Albanach but is included in other sources, such as genealogies of William I of Scotland William the Lion , and that of Constantine III of Scotland Causant n mac Cuil n found with the Senchus fer n Alban . In these genealogies he is noted as the father of Eochaid mac Domangairt . The Annals of Ulster for 673 report The killing of Domangart, son of Domnall Brecc, the king of D l Riata. Some king lists state that in his time the Cen l Comgaill separated from the Cen l nGabr in. It is not clear who succeeded Domangart as king of D l Riata, if he was such, or as king of the Cen l nGabr in. Known kings after Domangart include M el D in mac Conaill and Domnall Donn of the Cen l nGabr in and Ferchar Fota of the Cen l Loairn is assigned a long reign of 21 years by the Duan Albanach and other king lists, and this would place the beginning of his rule close to the death of Domangart. 1. Domangart Réti

Domangart R ti was king of D l Riata in the early 6th century, following the death of his father, Fergus M r . He had at least two sons Comgall mac Domangairt Comgall and Gabr n mac Domangairt Gabr n , both of whom became kings in succession. The Tripartite Life of St. Patrick states that he was present at the death of the saint, circa 493. Domangart died around 507 and was succeeded by Comgall. His byname, R ti, appears in Adomn n s Life of Saint Columba , in the form Corcu R ti , perhaps a synonym for D l Riata. Corcu, a Primitive Irish language term for a kin group, usually combined with the name of a divine or mythical ancestor, is apparently similar to the term D l. Alternatively, rather that representing an alternative name for all of D l Riata, it has been suggested Corcu R ti was the name given to the kin group which later divided to form the Cen l nGabr in of Kintyre and the Cen l Comgaill of Cowal , thus excluding the Cen l n engusa of Islay and the Cen l Loairn of middle and northern Argyll . He was co ruler with D nchad mac Conaing until 654, after which he was apparently sole ruler. His sons M el D in mac Conaill and Domnall Donn may have been kings of D l Riata. 1. Alpín mac Echdach

Alp n mac Eochaid may refer to two persons. The first person is a presumed king of D l Riata in the late 730s. The second is the father of Kenneth I of Scotland Kenneth MacAlpin Cin ed mac Ailp n . The name Alp n is taken to be a Pictish one, derived from the Anglo Saxons Anglo Saxon name Alboin lfwine Alp n s patronymic means son of Eochaid or son of Eochu. Alp n father of King Kenneth Irish annals such as the Annals of Ulster and the Annals of Innisfallen name Kenneth s father as one Alp n. This much is reasonably certain. The Chronicle of the Kings of Alba usually begins with Kenneth, but some variants include a reference to Kenneth s father Alp n was killed in Galloway , after he had entirely destroyed and devastated it. And then the kingdom of the Scots was transferred to the kingdom variant land of the Picts . John of Fordun IV, ii calls Kenneth s father Alpin son of Achay Alp n son of Eochu and has him killed in war with the Picts in 836 Andrew of Wyntoun s version mixes Fordun s war with the Picts with the Chronicle version which has him killed in Galloway. Alp n of D l Riata The genealogies produced for Kings of Scots in the Scotland in the High Middle Ages High Middle Ages traced their ancestry through Kenneth MacAlpin, through the Cen l nGabr in of D l Riata to Fergus M r , and then to legendary Ireland Irish kings such as Conaire M r and the shadowy Deda mac Sin . These genealogies, perhaps oral in origin, were subjected to some regularisation by the scribes who copied them into sources such as the Chronicle of Melrose , the Poppleton Manuscript and the like.
