    Between C & D 1983 1990 was a Lower East Side quarterly literary magazine edited by Joel Rose and Catherine Texier . Though a geographical reference from New York City , Between C & D has also been suggested to mean between coke and dope , giving an indication of the Transgressional fiction transgressive content and ethos. Its actual tagline was Sex. Drugs. Danger. Violence. Computers. . The magazine was printed on computer paper, sold in a plastic bag and featured original artwork on each binding. These limited run editions were collected by New York galleries and libraries and back issues sold on computer disk. Contributors included Kathy Acker , Bruce Benderson , Dennis Cooper , Gary Indiana , Tama Janowitz , Patrick McGrath novelist Patrick McGrath and Lynne Tillman . In 1988, Penguin Books Penguin published the anthology Between C & D New Writing from the Lower East Side Fiction Magazine for its Contemporary American Fiction series that included twenty five writers chosen by Rose and Texier.     Clarence Daniel Batchelor April 1, 1888, Osage City, Kansas September 5, 1977 was an American editorial cartoonist who was also noted for painting and sculpture . Batchelor s journalistic career began in 1911 as a staff artist for the Kansas City Star . From 1914 to 1918 he worked as a free lance artist, returning to newspapers in 1923 when he worked as a cartoonist in the New York Post for the Ledger Syndicate until 1931. He then found his permanent niche at the New York Daily News , where he worked until 1969. Batchelor s most famous editorial cartoon, which reflected the newspaper s isolationist stance and won him the Pulitzer Prize for 1937, depicted a prototypical Any European Youth greeted by a skull faced harlot representing War , and captioned, Come on in, I ll treat you right I used to know your Daddy. Sympathetic to women s suffrage , he also contributed cartoons to the Women s Journal and the Woman Voter . He also contributed his art to the causes of public health and public safety . Biography Born Eli Charles Daniel Shortridge, eighth of nine children born to Levi and Elizabeth Love Shortridge, he grew up in Monroe County, Missouri , and completed his education at an academy located near Paris, Missouri . He moved to Larimore, North Dakota with his family, second wife Anna Burton and twin daughters, in 1882, and ran for governor ten years later in 1893 on a Electoral alliance fusion ticket composed of People s Party United States Populists , Democratic Party United States Democrats , and the Farmers Alliance , who merged into a single political party . During his administration, Shortridge approved the issuance of 50,000 in bonds to construct the south wing of the List of state capitols in the United States state capitol and approved the purchase of an executive mansion for the governor s residence . He also supported an appropriation for a state elevator at Duluth, Minnesota . An out of state terminal elevator was not constructed largely due to a provision requiring North Dakota sovereignty over any elevator site. The bill passed, but the provision that Minnesota or Wisconsin would have to cede sovereignty over the site created an unacceptable situation for both states.
