Edward Dixon Abbott had been employed in the design department of the Wolseley Motors Wolseley car company before joining the coachbuilders Page and Hunt which had started operations in 1920. Abbott became their London Sales Manager and when Page and Hunt failed in 1929 he took over their Farnham works forming a new company taking his name. Many of the early orders were for commercial vehicles keeping the new company afloat during the worst of the depression but some car body making continued. From 1931 Abbott took a stand each year at the London Motor Show. Cars fitted with bodies included the Austin 7 Austin 7 , Daimler Motor Company Daimler s and Talbot s. The company built a glider called the Abbott Farnham sailplane Farnham Sailplane and in 1931 the company established a subsidiary Abbott Baynes Sailplanes Ltd to build more sailplanes. The parent company continued to sell and advertise the sailplanes. Born in Aberdeen , D.E.R. Watt s family were the proprietors of the Aberdeen University Press . Watt studied at Aberdeen Grammar School , before reading history at Aberdeen University . He graduated in 1950, and moved to Oriel College, Oxford Oriel College , University of Oxford Oxford , receiving his Doctor of Philosophy D. Phil in 1957. Watt taught history at St Andrews University for his entire career, excepting a year s study at Columbia University . He worked for many years on editing and translating a nine volume edition, the first since 1759, of Abbot Walter Bower s Scotichronicon , a key resource for Scotland in the Late Middle Ages . Professor Watt also published on the Scottish church where he was the acknowledged expert on sources, holding the chair in Scottish Church History at St Andrews. He worked for the publication of the Atlas of Scottish History , issued by Edinburgh University in 1975 and again, with revisions, in 1995.
