  1. Self-amplified stimulated emission

Self amplified stimulated or spontaneous emission SASE is a process within a free electron laser FEL by which a laser beam is created by the high energy electron beam . The lasing starts up from the random microbunching i.e., shot noise on the electron beam instead of being coherently produced by an input seed laser source. This source is fully transversely coherent at saturation, but, because the radiation starts from random noise at many radiation wavelengths, the longitudinal coherence of the radiation is less than that of the amplifier case but better than that of spontaneous radiation. This concept has been demonstrated at the SPring 8 FEL in Japan ref Cite web title Spring 8 Webpage url http www xfel.spring8.or.jp format accessdate 2007 12 21 ref , the Free electron LASer DESY Particle Accelerators, Facilities and Experiments at DESY FLASH in Hamburg and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory LCLS Linac Coherent Light Source LCLS at SLAC. 1. HERA-B

HERA B was an innovative, but ultimately unsuccessful, particle physics detector of the HERA accelerator at DESY . ref http www.slac.stanford.edu spires find experiments www2?ee DESY HERA B Description of HERA B on SPIRES ref Its primary aim was to measure CP violation in the decays of heavy B mesons in the late 1990s, several years ahead of the Large Hadron Collider and B Factory programs. Unlike most particle physics detectors, the particles were produced not by colliding two circulating beams head on, nor by slamming the beam into a stationary target, but by moving a thin wire target directly into the waste halo of the circulating proton beam of the HERA accelerator. The beam was unaffected by this scraping but the collision rate produced could be made extremely high, around 5 to 10 million interactions per second 5 10 Megahertz MHz . A novel scheme for moving the wires and the vertex detectors very close to the beam less than one centimetre , using a vacuum chamber and motorised arms , had to be developed. 1. HERMES experiment

HERMES was an experiment conducted using the Hadron Elektron Ring Anlage HERA particle accelerator located at DESY in Hamburg . The experiment s goal was to investigate the quark gluon structure of matter by examining how a nucleon s constituents affect its spin. HERMES completed its first run between 1995 and 2000, and a second run began in 2001 and ended during the summer of 2007. HERMES was conducted by scientist s from more than 13 countries. Method Polarized electrons are fired at polarized gas targets. The virtual photon emitted by the electron is also polarized and so seeks out quarks of spin in the same direction as the photon. The asymmetry of ejected quarks is found to deduce the net polarisation of the quarks. UGFS The unpolarized gas feed system was used for non polarized end of fill or heavy target running before the polarized target was removed in 2003. Currently the UGFS supplies the target gasses in the new detector configuration. After a short postdoctoral appointment with Bloembergen he was appointed an assistant professor at Harvard University, where he is now a Frank B. Baird, Jr. Professor of Science, at both Physics Department and Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Research Pershan began his career in nuclear magnetic resonance however, before moving on to other things, he and Bloembergen produced some of the first papers on non linear optics , a field for which Bloembergen later received Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981. He remained active in this field until the early 1980 s when he wrote a book on liquid crystals and moved into the then new field of synchrotron radiation . Along with Jens Als Nielsen , Pershan developed the first synchrotron x ray reflectometer for the study of the horizontal free surface of a liquid, and carried out the first synchrotron measurements on liquid surfaces at DESY HASYLAB HASYLAB , DESY in 1982. The liquid surface spectrometers now at Advanced Photon Source and the National Synchrotron Light Source are all variations of the HASYLAB instrument. 1. Nucleon spin structure

Deleted image removed File Quark spin yellow.jpg thumb right Nucleon spin structure Nucleon spin structure describes the partonic structure of nucleon proton and neutron intrinsic angular momentum Spin physics spin . The key question is how the nucleon s spin, whose magnitude is 1 2 , is carried by its constituent parton particle physics parton s quark s and gluon s . It was originally expected before the 1980s that quarks carry all of the nucleon spin, but later experiments contradict this expectation. In the late 1980s, the European Muon Collaboration EMC conducted experiments that suggested the spin carried by quarks is not sufficient to account for the total spin of the nucleons. This finding astonished particle physicists at that time, and the problem of where the missing spin lies is sometimes referred to as the proton spin crisis . Experimental research on these topics has been continued by the Spin Muon Collaboration SMC and the COMPASS experiment at CERN , experiments E154 and E155 at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory SLAC , DESY HERMES HERMES at DESY , experiments at JLab and RHIC , and others. Global analysis of data from all major experiments confirmed the original EMC discovery and showed that the quark spin did contribute about 30 to the total spin of the nucleon. A major topic of modern particle physics is to find the missing angular momentum, which is believed to be carried either by gluon spin, or by gluon and quark orbital angular momentum. This fact is expressed by the sum rule, math frac 1 2 frac 1 2 Sigma q Sigma g L q L g. math The gluon spin components math Sigma g math are being measured by many experiments. Quark and gluon angular momenta will be studied by measuring so called generalized parton distributions GPD through deeply virtual compton scattering DVCS experiments, conducted mainly at JLab.
