Library of Congress Dabney Carr April 27, 1773 January 8, 1837 was born at Spring Forest, a Goochland County, Virginia , plantation just three weeks before the death of his father, also named Dabney Carr Virginia assemblyman Dabney Carr , brother in law and close friend of Thomas Jefferson . Jefferson took an active role in the support and education of his nephew after his father s death. He attended Hampden Sydney College and returned home to study law with William Wirt Attorney General William Wirt , who was just one year older. The two men remained friends for the rest of their lives. An extensive collection of their letters can be found in the Manuscripts Department, Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . He married his paternal cousin, Elizabeth Carr in June of 1802. Carr started practice in Albemarle County and, in 1811, became Chancellor of the Winchester District. Using the pseudonym Obediah Squaretoes, Carr contributed an article to William Wirt s The Old Bachelor 1814 . In 1824, he was elected a judge of the Supreme Court of Virginia Court of Appeals and held this office until his death. He is interred in Richmond, Virginia Richmond s Shockoe Hill Cemetery . His nephew, Dabney S. Carr Dabney Smith Carr , was a newspaper publisher and later was United States Ambassador to Turkey U.S. Minister to Turkey 1843 49 . Sources John T.     about the Virginia assemblyman and brother in law of Thomas Jefferson his son Dabney Carr Dabney Carr October 26, 1743 May 16, 1773 was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses and brother in law of Thomas Jefferson . Carr was born on October 26, 1743 to John and Barbara Carr n e Overton at Bear Castle, a large farm in Louisa County, Virginia . He studied law at The College of William & Mary at the same time as his friend, Thomas Jefferson. Carr married Jefferson s younger sister, Martha, in 1765. In 1771, Carr was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses and again in 1772. In March 1773, he proposed the creation of a Committee of correspondence to help coordinate communication between Virginia and other colonies. He died of ill health soon after, on May 16, 1773, a few weeks after the birth of his son, Dabney Carr , and was buried on the grounds of Monticello , by his best friend Jefferson.
