The open areas of the bog are covered with cotton grass , cross leaved heath and at least six species of sphagnum mosses, the last of which are especially important, as their remains accumulate to form peat , the substrate of the bog. Eleven species of Dragonfly dragonflies and Damselfly damselflies have been recorded at the reserve, including the rare Black Darter black darter , Britain s smallest dragonfly. They are joined by 19 species of Butterfly butterflies , including the Green Hairstreak green hairstreak . In recent years the trust has expanded the reserve by acquiring a small adjacent stand of conifers, clearing the trees, and blocking drains to raise water levels. This area is now regenerating into heathland , although it will take many years to fully reinstate the original flora.
