Unreferenced date December 2010 The Granger laws were a series of laws passed in western states of the United States after the American Civil War to regulate grain elevator, railroad freight rates and to address long and short haul discrimination. They were passed through political agitation both by merchants associations and by so called Granger parties, which were third parties formed most often by members of the Patrons of Husbandry, an organization for farmers commonly called the Grange. Granger c. 1680s in Dijon 1734 near Basra , was a French people French physician and traveller, with a major interest in natural history . According to the preface of the only work attributed to him, his real name was Tourtechot , and for reasons not explained he changed it to Granger. Granger or Tourtechot is presumably his surname. Sometimes he is listed as Nicolas Granger, Tourtechot de Granger, or N. Granger. In the 1720s he worked as a physician in a Christian hospital in Tunis , a position he acquired on account of his friend Jean Pierre Pignon , the French consul in Tunis at that time. Moving back to France in 1728, he accompanied Dignon to Egypt in 1731, when Pignon was assigned French Consul in Cairo. During his stay in Egypt, Granger travelled up the Nile to Aswan , documenting a large number of ancient monuments, as well as a considerable amount of its natural history, including animals, plants and minerals. On his return from Egypt in 1732, Granger received a commission from King Louis XV of France , to travel around the Middle East and acquire any kind of information that could help advance the knowledge of natural history in general. Leaving France in 1733 he managed to visit Crete , Egypt again, Cyprus , Palestine and Syria , but died en route toward Persian Empire Persian , two days march from Basra. Grangers account and notes was published in French in 1745, in German 1751 and in English 1773. The flower Grangeria of the family Chrysobalanaceae is named after him. Geography Granger is located at 43 30 00 North and 92 8 15 West. The Iowa Minnesota line forms the village s southern border. The Upper Iowa River runs through it. Across the border to the south lies its twin village, Florenceville, Iowa Florenceville , Iowa . History The engineers C. H. Lewis and Brown L. Granger surveyed and plotted the land in 1857. This is the same year that the neighboring village of Florenceville was established. The railroad never came to Granger Florenceville. While several businesses were successfully established, the town failed to take off as hoped and would remain small. In September 1982, Granger celebrated its 125th anniversary along with Florenceville and drew a crowd of over 5000 people. Economy Granger once featured all the services of a full fledged town an IGA grocery store, a bank, a post office, a Pure Oil and other gas stations, the Long Branch Saloon and other businesses. The post office closed upon the retirement of its last postmaster. Ike s IGA closed not long after the owner s passing. The Long Branch was destroyed by fire and later reopened across the state line in Florenceville.
