  1. Pivot element

The pivot or pivot element is the element of a Matrix mathematics matrix , an array data structure array , or some other kind of finite set , which is selected first by an algorithm e.g. Gaussian elimination , Quicksort , Simplex algorithm , etc. , to do certain calculations. In the case of matrix algorithms, a pivot entry is usually required to be at least distinct from zero, and often distant from it in this case finding this element is called pivoting . Pivoting may be followed by an interchange of rows or columns to bring the pivot to a fixed position and allow the algorithm to proceed successfully, and possibly to reduce round off error. Pivoting might be thought of as swapping or sorting rows or columns in a matrix, and thus it can be represented as matrix multiplication multiplication by permutation matrix permutation matrices . However, algorithms rarely move the matrix elements because this would cost too much time instead, they just keep track of the permutations. The pivot element in quicksort is the element that is selected as the boundary for partitioning. Quicksort sorts all elements left and right of the pivot element recursion recursively . Overall, pivoting adds more operations to the computational cost of an algorithm. These additional operations are sometimes necessary for the algorithm to work at all. Other times these additional operations are worthwhile because they add numerical stability to the final result. 1. Absorbing element

In mathematics , an absorbing element is a special type of element of a Set mathematics set with respect to a binary operation on that set. In semigroup theory, the absorbing element is called a Semigroup Identity and zero zero element ref J.M. Howie, p. 2 3 ref ref name kkm M. Kilp, U. Knauer, A.V. Mikhalev p. 14 15 ref because there is no risk of confusion with zero element other notions of zero. In this article the two notions are synonymous. Definition Formally, let S , be a set S with a binary operation on it known as a magma algebra magma . A zero element is an element z such that for all s in S , z s s z z . A refinement ref name kkm are the notions of left zero , where one requires only that z s z , and right zero , where s z z . Absorbing elements are particularly interesting for semigroup s, especially the multiplicative semigroup of a semiring . In the case of a semiring with 0, the definition of an absorbing element is sometimes relaxed so that it is not required to absorb 0 otherwise, 0 would be the only absorbing element. ref J.S. 1. Beam element

unreferenced date May 2011 Orphan date May 2011 The beam element is a mathematical construct used to model Beam structure beam type structures. The beam is a common structure used in engineering. The frame of a steel building , the frame of a vehicle street lights can all be described by beams. For these reasons the element is used frequently in finite element analysis . The typical beam element assumes all loading is discrete at the ends of the beam. In cases where there is intermediate loading, multiple elements are used. If the intermediate loading is distributed, a load lumping scheme needs to be applied to map the forces to the node. In these situations the beam element fails to give the analytical solution for beam deflection. Provided that a consistent load lumping scheme is applied the element will predict the correct internal forces and displacement at the nodes. Thus by including increasingly more beam elements to a problem, the solution will converge to the exact result. Category Mathematical modeling ...   more details

  1. Greatest element

In mathematics , especially in order theory , the greatest element of a subset S of a partially ordered set poset is an element of S which is greater than or equal to any other element of S . The term least element is defined duality order theory dually . A bounded poset is a poset that has both a greatest element and a least element. Formally, given a partially ordered set P , , then an element g of a subset S of P is the greatest element of S if s g , for all elements s of S . Hence, the greatest element of S is an upper bound of S that is contained within this subset. It is necessarily unique. By using instead of in the above definition, one defines the least element of S . Like upper bounds, greatest elements may fail to exist. Even if a set has some upper bounds, it need not have a greatest element, as shown by the example of the negative real numbers. This example also demonstrates that the existence of a least upper bound the number 0 in this case does not imply the existence of a greatest element either. Similar conclusions hold for least elements. A finite chain order theory chain always has a greatest and a least element. Greatest elements of a partially ordered subset must not be confused with maximal element s of such a set which are elements that are not smaller than any other element. A poset can have several maximal elements without having a greatest element. In a total order totally ordered set both terms coincide it is also called maximum in the case of function values it is also called the absolute maximum , to avoid confusion with a local maximum. 1. Irreducible element

In abstract algebra , a non zero non unit ring theory unit element in an integral domain is said to be irreducible if it is not a product of two non units. Irreducible elements should not be confused with prime element s. A non unit element math a math in a commutative ring math R math is called prime if whenever math a bc math for some math b math and math c math in math R math , then math a b math or math a c math . Every prime element is irreducible, ref Consider p a prime that is reducible p ab. Then p ab p a or p b. Say p a a pc, then we have p ab pcb p 1 cb 0. Because R is a domain we have cb 1. So b is a unit and p is irreducible. ref but the converse is not true in general. The converse is true for unique factorization domain UFD s or, more generally, GCD domain s. Moreover, while an ideal generated by a prime element is a prime ideal , it is not true in general that an ideal generated by an irreducible element is an irreducible ideal . However, if math D math is a GCD domain, and math x math is an irreducible element of math D math , then the ideal generated by math x math is an irreducible ideal of math D math . ref http planetmath.org encyclopedia IrreducibleIdeal.html ref Example In the quadratic integer ring math mathbf Z sqrt 5 math , it can be shown using Field norm norm arguments that the number 3 is irreducible. However, it is not a prime in this ring since, for example, math 3 left 2 sqrt 5 right left 2 sqrt 5 right 9 math but math 3 math does not divide either of the two factors. ref William W. A Warburg impedance element can be difficult to recognize because it is nearly always associated with a charge transfer resistance see charge transfer complex and a double layer capacitance see double layer interfacial , but is common in many systems. The Warburg diffusion element Z sub W sub is a constant phase element CPE , with a constant phase of 45 phase independent of frequency and with a magnitude inversely proportional to the square root of the frequency by math Z W frac A W sqrt omega frac A W j sqrt omega math math Z W sqrt 2 frac A W sqrt omega math where A sub W sub is the Warburg coefficient or Warburg constant , j is the imaginary number and is the angular frequency . The presence of the Warburg element can be recognised if a linear relationship on the log of a Bode plot log Z versus log w exists with a slope of value 1 2.
