He was associated with the New York Post Evening Post and the New York Herald Herald 1854 58 , and then became an editing editor and subsequently the managing editor of the New York World World . He married Jane Cunningham Croly Jane Cunningham , known as Jennie June , in 1856. In 1863, during the Civil War, he co authored the anonymous pamphlet Miscegenation , which tried to discredit the Abolitionist movement and the Lincoln Administration by playing on racist fears common among whites. The anonymous author of the pamphlet claimed to be an Abolitionist in favour of promoting the intermarriage of whites and blacks, a taboo practice that at the time was seen as a threat to white supremacy . He was born at Dublin , his father was a physician. Graduated from University of Dublin Trinity College, Dublin with an MA in 1804 and LLD in 1831. Croly married Margaret Helen Begbie in 1819. Service After becoming ordained in 1804, he first labored in Ireland until moving to London around 1810. In 1835, Henry Brougham, 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux Lord Brougham , a Whig patron and relative, helped Croly become Rector of St Stephen Walbrook , in the slums. It was there he opened a pulpit that had been closed for a hundred years and developed a high reputation as a preacher. He also served at the same time in St Benet Sherehog . He retained both positions until his death. Published works He wrote poems, dramas, satires, novels, history, and theological works, and attained some measure of success in all. Perhaps his best known works are his novels, Salathiel 1828 , founded on the legend of the Wandering Jew , and Mareton 1846 . He wrote as a dramatic critic to the New Times and later as a foreign correspondent. Croly was the leading contributor to the Literary Gazette and Blackwood s Magazine , published from 1817 25. Croly was also associated with the Tory magazine Britannia . His chief contribution to theological literature is an exposition of the Apocalypse. Goodman began in theatre during the Great Depression , when he worked for the Federal Theater Project under the Works Projects Administration . From 1939, when he started his career, to 1961, Mr. Goodman represented more than 50 Broadway productions, including eight shows in 1960 alone. He also handled stars as varied as Jerome Robbins to Audrey Hepburn , and playwright s William Inge and Clifford Odets . In his early days as a publicist, he worked with John Houseman and Orson Welles at the Mercury Theatre. He worked with Ethel Merman on Gypsy and Mary Martin on The Sound of Music . Goodman claimed the producer David Merrick once fired him from three shows at once for taking a rival s account. He died of congestive heart failure in Manhattan . He was 89 years old.
