Robbins born 1954 is an United States American author of several historical fiction novels, and founder of the James River Writers and the Richmond based Podium Foundation. Biography The son of World War II veterans, David Lea Robbins was born on March 10, 1954, in Richmond, VA . He received his B.A. in Theater and Speech from the College of William and Mary in 1976, then his Juris Doctorate from the same school four years later. He spent one year practicing environmental law in South Carolina to keep an agreement made with his father regarding the money spent on law school. When that time was up, he turned to freelance writing. He did not devote his time to writing fiction until 1990. After the sweeping success of War of the Rats and his subsequent novels, Robbins was able to become a full time novelist . In 2007, Robbins returned to his alma mater , this time as the Writer in Residence. He was so popular among the students that they petitioned for him to return an extra semester before passing the torch to Tom De Haven , author of Funny Papers and It s Superman . He served as a United States Congress man from 1919 to 1921. He was elected by the people of Illinois to the United States Senate in 1926, but the Senate never allowed him to take his seat. He first ran for the Republican Party United States Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1920. In that first year of suffrage , women s votes were counted separately from men s. He was beating William B. McKinley by 27,000 votes after the male votes were counted, but once the female votes were counted McKinley had won by 11,000 votes. McKinley went on to win the general election. In 1921, Smith became the chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission , which oversaw utilities in the state. He prepared to run again for the Senate in 1926. At the time, Illinois had no campaign finance laws. Smith collected donations from several wealthy executives who ran public utilities, including 125,000 from Samuel Insull . He used this money to defeat McKinley in the Republican primary held in the summer of 1926. Smith went on to win the general election held in November of that year, although Julius Rosenwald offered him 550,000 of Sears, Roebuck & Company stock ... denied.
