Politics of Gambia The National Assembly is the legislative branch of government in The Gambia . Composition and electoral system The National Assembly is unicameral and consists of 53 members who serve a five year term. 48 members are directly elected while the remaining five are appointed by the Heads of State of The Gambia President . Members are elected in single member constituencies using the simple majority, or First past the post system. History Legislative representation based on Universal suffrage universal adult suffrage in The Gambia began in May 1962, when elections were held for a 32 seat House of Representatives . These elections were won by the People s Progressive Party The Gambia People s Progressive Party PPP , which was led by Dawda Jawara . After independence in 1965, the PPP continued to dominate the House of Representatives by winning a series of free, democratic elections in 1966, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, and 1992. While opposition parties were continuously present in the House, they were never able to successfully wrest power from the PPP. Jawara s government was overthrown in a July 1994 military coup led by Yahya Jammeh . The constitution and all elected institutions, including the House of Representatives, were dissolved. After the coup, political party activities were banned. The ban was lifted in August 1996 following the approval of a new constitution, but three Jawara era parties the PPP, Gambian People s Party GPP , and the National Convention Party Gambia National Convention Party NCP remained proscribed. Legislative elections to the renamed National Assembly took place on 2 January 1997. The AFPRC deposed the Dawda Jawara government and banned opposition political activity. Lieutenant Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh , chairman of the AFPRC, became head of state. Few months later Captain Sadibou Hydara who was the spokesperson of the AFPRC, and Captain Sabali deputy leader of the AFPRC were accused by president Jammeh of an alleged coup plot. Both men were arrested and detained at the maximum prison. Captain Hydara was tortured and killed in prison. It was believed that Captain Hydara who was the most educated among the original members of the AFPRC was in favor of returning the country to civilian rule, and strongly objected to president Jammeh s candidacy. The AFPRC announced a transition plan for return to democratic civilian rule. The Provisional Independent Electoral Commission PIEC was established in 1996 to conduct national elections. The transition process included the compilation of a new electoral register adoption of a new constitution by referendum in August of that year presidential elections in September of that year and legislative elections in January 1997, respectively. Colonel Yahya A.J.J. Jammeh Jammeh retired from the Army to run for president. Col. Jammeh won the elections, and was sworn into office as President of the Republic of The Gambia on November 6, 1996. Mustapha Danso died 30 September 1981 was a constable in the Military of The Gambia military of The Gambia who in 1980 killed Eku Mahoney Emmanuel Eku Mahoney , the deputy commander of the paramilitary field force of the country. Danso s actions ultimately led to an attempted coup d tat in July 1981 and his own Capital punishment execution . Danso shot and killed Mahoney in October 1980 with a semi automatic rifle . At his trial in December, Danso was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. The unrest caused by the incident led to the attempted coup which began on 30 July 1981 and was led by Kukoi Sanyang . However, President of The Gambia President Dawda Jawara put down the revolt by 5 August with the assistance of Senegal ese troops. On 30 September 1981, Danso was executed in Banjul . He was the first person executed by The Gambia since it gained independence in 1965. Since Danso s execution, no other prisoners have been legally put to death in The Gambia.
