Liber Scintillarum literally The Book of Sparks is a late seventh or early eighth century Patristic anthology florilegium of biblical and patristic sayings in Latin . It was compiled by Defensor , a monk who in the preface identifies himself as a member of Ligug Abbey St Martin s Abbey at Ligug , near Poitiers, and who wrote the work at the behest of his teacher Ursinus the Abbot Ursinus , the abbot of St Martin s. Virtually nothing is known of the monk beyond what the preface offers us. The compilation was written sometime between 636, when the important source Isidore of Seville died, and about 750, when the earliest extant manuscript appears to have been produced. The sparks scintillae of the title refer to sayings such as maxims and proverbs of the Lord and his saints, which have been excerpted from the Bible and the Church Fathers, and rearranged into as many as 81 chapters. The headings of these chapters refer mainly to vices e.g. avarice, fornication , virtues patience, wisdom , devotional practices confession, prayer and common themes of human life marriage, feasting . In the early part of the eleventh century, a copy of the Latin text was accompanied by an interlinear gloss interlinear Old English gloss, for which a little space between the lines was available. It is found in British Library BL , Royal MS 7 C IV, together with De vitiis et peccatis , again with an interlinear Old English gloss. It belonged to Rochester Cathedral Priory and probably joined the Old Royal Library as part of the spoils of the Dissolution of the Monasteries , like the Rochester Bestiary . Editions J.P. The presentation copy, ordered by chancellor Konrad of Querfurt , is now MS. 120 II of the Berne Municipal Library . It tells the story of Tancred of Lecce s attempt to take control of Sicily , an attempt thwarted by the successful military campaign of Henry VI, Holy Roman Emperor . Composed in honour of Henry VI and intended for presentation to him, the poem, distributed into three books, the last one being an encomiom of Henry VI, and 52 continuously numbered particulae, is written in a mannered and sophisticated style. It is often mocking and extremely biased see for example part. 4 7 9 25f. and the illustrations , but, once allowance has been made for this, is a useful and detailed historical source. It contains much information about Constanze of Sicily , the wife of Henry VI part. 20ff. , and the birth of her son Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor part. 43 . The author, Stephan Endlicher , used a collection arranged by Charles von H gel to compile the first flora for the new settlements. Hugel visited the region during 1833 1834, several years after the founding of the colony. The work provided formal descriptions, in Latin, of new species and genera of plants. The single installment was produced in Europe by Endlicher in 1837, the work also included contributions by Eduard Fenzl , George Bentham , Heinrich Wilhelm Schott . The abbreviation Enum. Pl.
