  1. Incongruent melting

Incongruent melting occurs when a substance does not melt uniformly and decomposes into another substance. For example, potassium feldspar KAlSi sub 3 sub O sub 8 sub decomposes to leucite KAlSi sub 2 sub O sub 6 sub when it melts. The decomposition is not complete, however. Most of the feldspar does melt, a portion of it decomposes to leucite and some quartz SiO sub 2 sub is left over, since the chemical formula s of potassium feldspar and leucite differ by SiO sub 2 sub . Another mineral that melts incongruently is enstatite MgSiO sub 3 sub , which decomposes to forsterite Mg sub 2 sub SiO sub 4 sub . Enstatite does melt congruently between pressure s of 2.5 and 5.5 bar unit kilobar s. 1. Disc decompression traction procedure

Unreferenced date December 2009 Disc Decompression Traction Procedures are used by healthcare professionals specializing in therapeutic procedures that facilitate healing of biomechanical abnormalites of the musculoskelatal system of the human body. Spinal disc Intervertebral discs are commonly treated for abnormal function due to displacement of the nucleus pulposus , the gelatinous center that acts as a ball bearing joint and shock absorber. The surrounding annulus fibrosus disci intervertebralis annulus fibrosus , rubberband like layers of fibro elastic tissue, maintains a grip of the central nucleus pulposus. Spinal disc herniation is treated in a variety of ways, from exercise therapy or manipulation to surgery. Recent development of Decompression Traction Equipment has led to a higher success rate of disc healing than previous treatment options. The decompression traction procedure relieves pressure that builds up on the discs and nerves by drawing areas of herniated disc back into place. This is accomplished by creating negative pressure within the disc, referred to as negative intra discal pressure, creating a vacuum to draw the bulging and herniated disc material back into the disc space and relieve pressure. This process allows the stretched or torn annulus fibrosus tissue fibers to heal and tighten due to the slack created by the decompression traction therapy. Citation needed date January 2007 Many research articles point out the positive effects of spinal disc decompression therapy. This type of therapy is valuable for varying degrees of disc compromise. Discs that have full herniations to those that are small protrusions. 1. Cell disruption by nitrogen decompression

Permission has been granted to republish this article on Wikipedia from http www.parrinst.com default.cfm?page id 243. Please see the talk page for more information Cell disruption by rapid decompression is one of several methods of cell disruption and is also called explosive decompression or Cell disruption The cellbomb cell bomb . Applications The technique is used to Homogenization biology Homogenize cells and tissues Release intact organelles Prepare cell membrane s Release labile biochemical s Produce uniform and repeatable homogenates without subjecting the sample to extreme chemical or physical stress. According to manufacturers of nitrogen decompression devices, the method is particularly well suited for treating mammalian and other membrane bound cells. It has also been used successfully for treating plant cell s, for releasing virus from fertilized eggs and for treating fragile bacterium bacteria . It is not recommended for untreated bacterial cells. Yeast , fungus , spores and other materials with tough cell walls do not respond well to this method. How it works Large quantities of nitrogen are first dissolved in the cell under high pressure within a suitable pressure vessel . Then, when the gas pressure is suddenly released, the nitrogen comes out of the solution as expanding bubbles that stretch the membranes of each cell until they rupture and release the contents of the cell. Nitrogen decompression is claimed to be more protective of enzyme s and organelle s than ultrasound ultrasonic and mechanical homogenizing methods and to compare favorably to the controlled disruptive action obtained in a PTFE and glass mortar and pestle homogenizer. While other disruptive methods depend upon friction or a mechanical Shearing physics shear ing action that generate heat, the nitrogen decompression procedure is accompanied by an adiabatic expansion that cools the sample instead of heating it. The blanket of inert nitrogen gas that saturates the cell suspension and ...   more details

  1. Pressure melting point

Unreferenced date July 2008 This term is used in the glaciological literature to refer to the melting point of ice under pressure. As the pressure increases in the downward direction, the melting temperature of ice decreases. This pressure melting point can reach values many degrees below 0 C. Due to geothermal heat flux from below, the temperature at the same time increases. The level where ice can start melting is where the pressure melting point equals the actual temperature. In static equilibrium conditions, this would be the highest level where water can exist in a glacier . It would also be the level of the base of an ice shelf , or the ice water interface of a subglacial lake . Category Glaciology glaciology stub ...   more details

  1. Melting point apparatus

Image Fisher Johns Melting Point Apparatus.jpg thumb A Fisher Johns apparatus A melting point apparatus is a scientific instrument used to determine the melting point of a substance. Some types of melting point apparatuses include the Thiele tube , Fisher Johns apparatus, Gallenkamp Electronic melting point apparatus and automatic melting point apparatus. Design While the outward designs of apparati can vary greatly most apparati use a sample loaded into a sealed capillary melting point capillary that is then placed in the apparatus. The sample is then heated, either by a heating block or an oil bath, and as the temperature increases the sample is observed to determine when the phase change from solid to liquid occurs. The operator or the machine records the temperature range starting with the initial phase change temperature and ending with the completed phase change temperature. The temperature range that is determined can then be averaged to gain the melting point of the sample being examined. Apparati usually have a control panel that allows the starting and final temperatures, as well as the temperature gradient in units per minute to be programmed. Some machines have several channels which permit more than one sample to be tested at a time. The control panel might have buttons which allow the start and end of the melting point range to be recorded. Image TheMeltingpot1.jpg thumb right Theatre Programme for The Melting Pot 1916 The Melting Pot is a play by Israel Zangwill , first staged in 1908. It depicts the life of a Russians Russian Jewish immigrant family, the Quixanos. David Quixano has survived a pogrom , which killed his mother and sister, and he wishes to forget this horrible event. He composes an American Symphony and wants to look forward to a society free of ethnic divisions and hatred, rather than backward at his traumatic past. The hero of the play proclaims America is God s Crucible, the great Melting Pot where all the races of Europe are melting and reforming... Germans and Frenchmen, Irishmen and Englishmen, Jews and Russians into the Crucible with you all God is making the American. ref As quoted in Gary Gerstle American Crucible Race and Nation in the Twentieth Century, Princeton University Press, 2001, p. 51 ref Some critics of the play have taken issue with David s apparent willingness to give up his ties to Judaism in order to become American. Although the idea of melting as a metaphor for ethnic assimilation had been used before, Zangwill s play popularized the term melting pot as a symbol for this occurrence in American society. Fact date April 2007 The Melting Pot opened at the Comedy Theatre in New York on September 6, 1909, and ran for 136 performances. It was produced by Liebler & Co. and staged directed by Hugh Ford . Vacuum induction melting is a process for melting metal under vacuum conditions using electromagnetic induction . It works by creating electrical eddy currents in the metal which heats the charge to melt it. This process is used for refining of high purity metal and alloys, among other things.
