  1. Counterfactual definiteness

In some interpretations of quantum mechanics , counterfactual definiteness CFD is the ability to speak with meaning of the definiteness of the results of measurements that have not been performed i.e. the ability to assume the existence of objects, and properties of objects, even when they have not been measured . A macroscopic example of CFD would be the assumption without measurement that a ball, thrown into the air, will return to the Earth due to gravity. CFD says that if a phenomenon the return of an airborne ball to the Earth has been reproducibly measured in the past, one can safely assume its presence in the future without having to refer to additional measurement events for proof of its existence. More scientific rigor rigorously , an interpretation of quantum mechanics satisfies CFD if it includes in the statistical population of measurement results, those measurements which are counter factual by virtue of their being excluded by the quantum mechanical prohibition on simultaneous measurement of certain pairs of properties. ref Henry P Stapp S matrix interpretation of quantum theory Physical Review D Vol 3 6 1303 1971 ref For example, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that you cannot simultaneously know both the position and momentum of a particle. Suppose one measures the position this act destroys any information about its momentum. Is it then possible to talk about the outcome one would have obtained if one had measured its momentum instead of its position? The sign rtl lang ar is most commonly written in combination with rtl lang ar transl ar DIN alif rtl lang ar , rtl lang ar Ta marbuta transl ar DIN t marb ah lang ar or stand alone rtl lang ar hamza transl ar DIN hamzah lang ar . An transl ar DIN alif should always be written unless the word ends in transl ar DIN t marb ah , transl ar DIN hamzah or is a diptote , even though the transl ar DIN un , transl ar DIN an or transl ar DIN in is not written. Nunation is used only in literary Arabic it is absent in everyday varieties of Arabic spoken Arabic , and many Arabic textbooks introduce even literary Arabic without these endings. Since Arabic has no indefinite article , nouns in a syntactic context unmarked for definiteness are generally indefinite this has led to the extremely common but inaccurate belief that nunation is a marker for indefiniteness and is analogous to an indefinite article. The lack of a marker for definiteness does not necessarily make a word indefinite in fact, many definite nouns p ...   more details

  1. Superdeterminism

expert subject Physics date October 2009 quantum In the context of quantum mechanics , superdeterminism is a term that has been used to describe a hypothetical class of theories which evade Bell s theorem by virtue of being completely determinism deterministic . Bell s theorem depends on the assumption of counterfactual definiteness , which technically does not apply to deterministic theories. It is conceivable, but arguably unlikely, that someone could exploit this loophole to construct a local hidden variable theory that reproduces the predictions of quantum mechanics. Bell s theorem assumes that the types of measurements performed at each detector can be chosen independently of each other and of the hidden variable being measured. In order for the argument for Bell s inequality to follow, it is necessary to be able to speak meaningfully of what the result of the experiment would have been, had different choices been made. This assumption is called counterfactual definiteness. But in a deterministic theory, the measurements the experimenters choose at each detector are predetermined by the laws of physics. It can therefore be argued that it is erroneous to speak of what would have happened had different measurements been chosen no other measurement choices were physically possible. Since the chosen measurements can be determined in advance, the results at one detector can be affected by the type of measurement done at the other without any need for information to travel faster than the speed of light. John S. Bell John Bell discussed superdeterminism in a BBC interview ref BBC Radio interview with Paul Davies, 1985 ref blockquote There is a way to escape the inference of superluminal speeds and spooky action at a distance. But it involves absolute determinism in the universe, the complete absence of free will . In mathematics, Birch s theorem , ref B. J. Birch, Homogeneous forms of odd degree in a large number of variables , Mathematika, 4 , pages 102 105 1957 ref named for Bryan John Birch , is a statement about the representability of zero by odd degree forms. Statement of Birch s theorem Let K be an algebraic number field , k , l and n be natural numbers, r sub 1 sub ,..., r sub k sub be odd natural numbers, and f sub 1 sub ,..., f sub k sub be homogeneous polynomials with coefficients in K of degrees r sub 1 sub ,..., r sub k sub respectively in n variables, then there exists a number r sub 1 sub ,..., r sub k sub , l , K such that math n ge psi r 1, ldots,r k,l,K math implies that there exists an l dimensional vector subspace V of K sup n sup such that math f 1 x ldots f k x 0, quad forall x in V. math Remarks The proof of the theorem is by mathematical induction induction over the maximal degree of the forms f sub 1 sub ,..., f sub k sub . Essential to the proof is a special case, which can be proved by an application of the Hardy Littlewood circle method , of the theorem which states that if n is sufficiently large and r is odd, then the equation math c 1x 1 r ldots c nx n r 0, quad c i in mathbb Z , i 1, ldots,n math has a solution in integers x sub 1 sub ,..., x sub n sub , not all of which are 0. 1. Weil's criterion

In mathematics , Weil s criterion is a criterion of Andr Weil for the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis to be true. It takes the form of an equivalent statement, to the effect that a certain generalized function is positive definite function positive definite . Weil s idea was formulated first in a 1952 paper. It is based on the explicit formula L function explicit formulae of prime number theory, as they apply to Dirichlet L function s, and other more general global L function s. A single statement thus combines statements on the complex zeroes of all Dirichlet L functions. Weil returned to this idea in a 1972 paper, showing how the formulation extended to a larger class of L functions Artin Hecke L function s and to the global function field case. Here the inclusion of Artin L function s, in particular, implicates Artin conjecture L functions Artin s conjecture so that the criterion involves a Generalized Riemann Hypothesis plus Artin Conjecture. The case of function fields, of curves over finite fields, is one in which the analogue of the Riemann Hypothesis is known, by Weil s classical work begun in 1940 and Weil also proved the analogue of the Artin Conjecture. Therefore in that setting, the criterion can be used to show the corresponding statement of positive definiteness does hold. References A.
