  1. Anarawd ap Gruffydd

Anarawd ap Gruffydd died 1143 was a prince of Deheubarth in south west Wales . Lineage Anarawd was the eldest son of Gruffydd ap Rhys . On the death of his father in 1137 Anarawd took over the rule of Deheubarth. Resistance In 1138 he and his brother Cadell ap Gruffydd joined with the prince of Kingdom of Gwynedd Gwynedd , Owain Gwynedd and the latter s brother Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd in an assault on Cardigan Castle which was in Norman hands. The assault was aided by a fleet of Viking ships, but an agreement was reached and the siege lifted. Dispute with Canterbury In 1140 Anarawd again supported Owain Gwynedd, this time in the dispute with the Archbishop of Canterbury about the appointment of a Bishop of Bangor . Death by treachery However in 1143 Anarawd was treacherously killed by the men of Owain s brother Cadwaladr. Cadwaladr himself was strongly suspected of having ordered the killing. This greatly angered Owain, for Anarawd had been a key ally and was about to marry Owain s daughter. Owain sent his son Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd to strip Cadwaladr of his lands in Ceredigion in punishment. Succession Anarawd was followed on the throne of Deheubarth by his brother Cadell. His son, Einion ab Anarawd, was killed by his own servant in 1163, apparently on the orders of the Roger de Clare, 3rd Earl of Hertford . Owain ap Hywel died 987 was king of Deheubarth in south Wales and probably also controlled Kingdom of Powys Powys . Owain was the son of Hywel Dda , originally king of Deheubarth but by the end of his life king of most of Wales. On Hywel s death in 950 Deheubarth was shared between Owain and his two brothers, Rhodri ap Hywel Rhodri and Edwin ap Hywel Edwin . The sons of Hywel were not able to keep hold of Kingdom of Gwynedd Gwynedd , which was reclaimed for the traditional dynasty of Aberffraw by Iago ap Idwal and Ieuaf ap Idwal , the sons of Idwal Foel . The sons of Hywel retaliated by invading the north in 954, reaching as far north as the Conwy valley before being defeated in a battle at Llanrwst and being obliged to retreat to Ceredigion . Rhodri died in 953 and Edwin in 954, leaving Owain to rule Deheubarth alone. Owain did not again try to reclaim Gwynedd, but instead he and his son Einon turned eastwards to attack the kingdom of Morgannwg modern Glamorgan in 960, 970 and 977. Owain was now aging, and it appears that Einon took over the rule of the kingdom on behalf of his father. On a further raid on the east in 984, Einon was killed by the noblemen of Kingdom of Gwent Gwent . Following Einon s death, Owain s second son, Maredudd ab Owain Maredudd , took over the leadership in war, and in 986 did what his father had failed to do by seizing the throne of Gwynedd, ousting Ieuaf s son Cadwallon ab Ieuaf . 1. Rhys ap Maredudd

Rhys ap Maredudd c. 1250 1292 was a senior member of the Welsh royal house of Deheubarth , a principality of Medieval Wales . He was the great grandson of The Lord Rhys d. 1197 , prince of south Wales, and the last ruler of a united Deheubarth. He is best known for his leadership of a revolt in south Wales in 1287 88. Deheubarth having fragmented after the Lord Rhys death in 1197, Rhys ap Maredudd s father had ruled over a truncated portion of the ancient kingdom. Rhys succeeded his father in 1271 as lord of the region of Deheubarth known as the Cantref Mawr, and considered himself custodian of Dinefwr , the royal capital of Deheubarth. He ruled the Cantref Mawr of Deheubarth from 1271, but although his father had done so under the aegis of the prince of Wales , Llywelyn ap Gruffudd , Rhys came to no such agreement with the prince, and relations between the two men appear to have been cold. He was among the first Welsh noblemen to submit to the English crown during the Anglo Welsh war of 1276 77, doing so on the grounds that his claims to the lands of Maenordeilo, Mallaen, Caeo and Mabelfyw, and Dinefwr Castle all within Deheubarth, and ruled over by his great grandfather would be properly considered. The agreement has since been considered as indicative of Rhys ambitions to reconstitute Deheubarth as a unified kingdom within the principality of Wales. He continued to exercise power in the Cantref Mawr after Llywelyn s death in 1282, and the execution of the last native prince of Wales, Dafydd ap Gruffudd , the following year. His failure, alone of all the noblemen of Deheubarth, to adhere to Llywelyn and Dafydd s cause in the war of 1282 3 led to king Edward I of England bestowing additional lands on Rhys for his allegiance to the English crown. 1. Cadell ap Gruffydd

Cadell ap Gruffydd died 1175 was prince of the kingdom of Deheubarth in south west Wales. Cadell was the son of Gruffydd ap Rhys , who held part of the kingdom of Deheubarth with the remainder in the hands of various Normans Norman lords. Gruffydd died in 1137 and Cadell s brother Anarawd ap Gruffydd took over the throne. Cadell first appears in the historical records the following year, when he helped his brother Anarawd and Owain Gwynedd of Kingdom of Gwynedd Gwynedd and his brother Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd in an assault on Cardigan Castle . In 1143 Anarawd was murdered by Cadwaladr s men, and Cadell took over as prince of Deheubarth, continuing the work Anarawd had started to win back the remainder of his grandfather s kingdom. In 1146 he captured the castles of Carmarthen and Llanstephan , and the following year defeated Walter Fitzwiz. In 1150 he turned north and reclaimed southern Ceredigion , which had been held for Gwynedd by Hywel ab Owain Gwynedd . Cadell s career was effectively ended in 1151. When out hunting, he was attacked by a Norman force from Tenby , who left him assuming him to be dead. In fact he survived, but was so badly injured as to be unable to resume his activities. In 1153 he left on a pilgrimage to Rome , leaving the rule of Deheubarth to his younger brothers Maredudd ap Gruffydd Maredudd and Rhys ap Gruffydd Rhys . Cadell is not heard of again until 1175, when he entered the abbey of Strata Florida Abbey Strata Florida after a long illness and died there.
