  1. Domus Dei

Image Domus Dei Oct 2007.jpg thumb right 250px Domus Dei, October 2007. File Interior of Domus Dei church.JPG thumb right 250px The interior of the church Domus Dei Hospital of Saint Nicholas was an almshouse and hospice established in 1212 in Portsmouth , Hampshire , UK by Pierre des Roches , Bishop of Winchester, Hampshire Winchester . It is now also known as the Royal Garrison Church and is an English Heritage property and a listed Ancient Monument. History It had a regular staff of 13 consisting of a Master who held overall responsibility for 6 nuns and 6 monks. In 1450 an unpopular advisor to the king, Bishop Adam Moleyns of Chichester was conducting a service at the chapel of Domus Dei when a number of naval seamen resentful of being only partially paid and only provided with limited provisions burst in to the church, dragged out the bishop and murdered him. As a result of this the entire town of Portsmouth was placed under the Greater Excommunication , an interdict which lasted until 1508, removed at the request of Bishop Fox of Winchester, Hampshire Winchester . One of the conditions for the removal of the interdict included the building of a chantry chapel next to the hospital. In 1540, like other religious buildings, it was seized by King Henry VIII of England Henry VIII and until 1560 was used as an Armoury military armory . After 1560 it became the home of the local military governor. Throughout this time the chapel attached to the hospital remained in use and in 1662 it hosted the wedding of King Charles II of England Charles II and Princess Catherine of Braganza . Towards the end of the 17th century it fell into disrepair until it was restored in 1767 to become the Garrison church. On 10 January 1941 the buildings of Domus Dei were partially destroyed in an attack by Germany German bombers. The Garrison church remains, albeit roofless, as a popular tourist attraction. It was also used as the set for Horatio Hornblower s wedding in Hornblower Duty, 2003. External ...   more details

  1. Missio Dei

italictitle Attributes of God Missio Dei is a Latin Christian theological term that can be translated as the mission of God, or the sending of God. w Mission Christian Mission is understood as being derived from the very nature of God. The missionary initiative comes from God alone. In 1934, Karl Hartenstein, a German missiologist, coined the phrase in response to Karl Barth and his emphasis on actio Dei Latin for the action of God . blockquote When kept in the context of the Scriptures, missio Dei correctly emphasizes that God is the initiator of His mission to redeem through the Church a special people for Himself from all of the peoples of the world. 1. Dei Sepolcri

Dei Sepolcri is a poem written by the Italy Italian poet , Ugo Foscolo in 1806 and published in 1807. It consists of 295 hendecasyllabic verses. The carme as the author defined it is dedicated to another poet, Ippolito Pindemonte , with whom Foscolo had been discussing the recent Napoleon Bonaparte Napoleonic law regarding tombs. Foscolo has materialism materialistic views about man s destiny after death, but he strongly affirms the value of tombs as memory of noble souls or bright intellects. Political and Cultural Background File Ugo Foscolo.jpg thumb right 220px Ugo Foscolo The idea behind the poem can be traced back to 1804, when the Napoleon edict of Saint Cloud was issued. On September 5, 1806 the edict was applied to Italy. In short, the edict stated that all burials must take place outside the city walls, that for democratic reasons the burial monuments must all be of the same size, and their inscriptions controlled by a special commission. This caused Foscolo to contemplate upon the nature and philosophy of death. Being an atheist , Foscolo did not share the view of e.g fellow poet Ippolito Pindemonte , who defended the Christian cult as opposed to the new illuminist ideas brought on by the French regime. Even so, Foscolo was critical towards the Napoleonic decree regarding tombs, mostly for civic reasons Even though he affirms that there is no life after death, human beings will still aspire to transcend death. Tombs, regarded as monument over fallen heroes and virtuous men from the past, may inspire those living today for instance artists and poets. When marble monuments are destroyed by time, their memories survive in poems they have inspired, and can in turn inspire deep virtues in new generations. 1. Dei Filius

Dei Filius is the incipit of the dogmatic constitution of the First Vatican Council on the Catholicism Catholic faith , which was adopted unanimously on 24 April 1870. The constitution set forth the teaching of the holy Catholic Apostolic Roman Church on God, revelation and faith. ref http www.ewtn.com library COUNCILS V1.htm Roberto De Mattei, John Laughland, Pius IX page 137 ref Name used for the Church The draft presented to the Council on 8 March 1870 drew no serious criticism. But a group of 35 English speaking bishops, who feared that the opening phrase Sancta Romana Catholica Ecclesia might be construed as favouring the Anglicanism Anglican Branch Theory , raised objections to this expression, Holy Roman Catholic Church . They proposed that the word Roman be omitted out of concern that use of the term Roman Catholic would lend support to proponents of the Branch Theory. While the Council overwhelmingly rejected this proposal, the text was finally modified to read The Holy Catholic Apostolic and Roman Church . ref cite book author Avery Dulles title The Catholicity of the Church publisher Oxford University Press year 1987 ISBN 0198266952 page 131 ref The opening words Sancta Romana Catholica Ecclesia , were voted on on three separate dates. On the first occasion, when this chapter alone was considered, two votes concerned the opening words. The first was on a proposal by a few English speaking bishops to delete the word romana , thus changing Sancta Romana Catholica Ecclesia The Holy Roman Catholic Church to Sancta Catholica Ecclesia The Holy Catholic Church . 1. Immortale Dei

Immortale Dei is an 1885 encyclical of Pope Leo XIII on Church State relations, and specifically on the topic of civil allegiance, which is defined as a duty of loyalty and obedience which a person owes to the State of which he is a citizen. ref CathEncy url http www.newadvent.org cathen 03794b.htm title Civil Allegiance ref The word allegiance is a derivative of liege, free, and historically it signifies the service which a free man owed to his liege lord. In the matter in hand its meaning is wider, it is used to signify the duty which a citizen owes to the state of which he is a subject. The Catholic Encyclopaedia view That duty, according to the teaching of the Catholic Church, rests on nature itself and the sanctions of religion. As nature and religion prescribe to children dutiful conduct towards the parents who brought them into the world, so nature and religion impose on citizens certain obligations towards their country and its rulers. These obligations may be reduced to those of patriotism and obedience. Patriotism requires that the citizen should have a reasonable esteem and love for his country. He should take an interest in his country s history, he should know how to value her institutions, and he should be prepared to sacrifice himself for her welfare.
