    In genetics and especially genetic engineering , deletion mapping is a technique used to ascertain the location of mutation sites within a gene . The principle of deletion mapping involves crossing a strain which has a point mutation in a gene, with multiple strains who each carry a deletion in a different region of the same gene. Wherever recombination occurs between the two strains to produce a wild type gene regardless of frequency , the point mutation cannot lie within the region of the deletion. If recombination cannot produce any wild type genes, then it is reasonable to conclude that the point mutation and deletion are found within the same stretch of DNA .     In computer science , lazy deletion refers to a method of deleting elements from a hash table that uses open addressing . In this method, deletions are done by marking an element as deleted, rather than erasing it entirely. Deleted locations are treated as empty when inserting and as occupied during a search. The problem with this scheme is that as the number of delete insert operations increases the cost of a successful search increases. To improve this, when an element is searched and found in the table, the element is relocated to the first location marked for deletion that was probed during the search.     File deletion is a way of removing a computer file file from a computer s file system .
