- Justin D. Edwards
Orphan date February 2009 Justin D. Edwards born 1970 is a Canadian professor in the Department of English at Bangor University . In 2005, he was elected by fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge . Edwards received an M.A and Ph.D. in English from the Universit de Montr al , where he completed his doctoral dissertation on 19th and early 20th century U.S. travel literature. Between 1995 and 2005, he taught at the Universit de Montr al and the University of Copenhagen , where he was appointed as an associate professor in 2002. Gothic Literature Edwards contribution to the study of gothic literature started with Gothic Passages Racial Ambiguity and the American Gothic , which examines the development of U.S. gothic literature alongside 19th century discourses of passing and racial ambiguity. This book focused on the way in which writers of the period gothicized biracial and passing figures in order to frame them within the rubric of a demonization of difference. In Gothic Canada Reading the Spectre of a National Literature , he continued in the area by examining how collective stories about national identity and belonging tend to be haunted by artifice. Post colonialism His work in the field of postcolonialism, growing out of his work on travel writing started with Exotic Journeys Exploring the Erotics of U.S. Travel Literature , which examines the place of travel writing in the rhetoric of imperial expansion and colonial ideology. In this project, he focused on representations of sexuality and eroticism in 19th and early 20th century U.S. travel literature to capture defining moments in the formation of an American national identity. This book led to a collaborative work compiling an anthology of Asian and African travel literature, Other Routes 1500 Years of African and Asian Travel Writing , which collects primary pieces by travel writers from Asia and Africa stretching from the fifth to the 19th centuries. cleanup date November 2011 Enmity and Foe redirect here. For the band, see Enmity band . For other uses see Foe disambiguation and Enemy disambiguation . An enemy or foe is a relativism relativist term for an entity, whether an individual or a group, that is seen as forcefully adverse or threatening. The concept of an enemy has been observed to be basic for both individuals and communities . ref Mortimer Ostow, Spirit, Mind, & Brain A Psychoanalytic Examination of Spirituality and Religion 2007 , p. 73. ref The term enemy serves the social function of designating a particular entity as a threat, thereby invoking an intense emotional response to that entity. ref name IPP Martha L. Cottam, Beth Dietz Uhler, Elena Mastors, Introduction to Political Psychology 2009 , p. 54. ref The state of being or having an enemy is enmity . Terms Enemy is a strong word, and emotions associated with the enemy would include anger , frustration , envy , jealousy , fear , distrust , and possibly grudging respect . ref name IPP As a political concept, an enemy is likely to be met with hate , violence , battle and war . The opposite of an enemy is a friendship friend or Allies ally . Because the term the enemy is a bit bellicose and militaristic to use in polite society, informal substitutes are more often used. Often the substituted terms become pejorative s in the context that they are used. In any case, the designation of an enemy exists solely to denote the status of a particular group of people as a threat, and to propagate this designation within the local context. Substituted terms for an enemy often go further to meaningfully identify a known group as an enemy, and to pejoratively frame that identification. A government may seek to represent a person or group as a threat to the public good by designating that person or group to be a public enemy . The characterization of an individual or group as an enemy is called demonization . The propagation of demonization is a major aspect of ... more details
