Orphan date November 2006 Coord 51.0975 0.9429 display title region GB scale 2000 Plestor House is a house in the centre of Selborne , Hampshire , England . The house is named for its location adjacent to the village s plestor . Architecturally, the house has grown over the centuries. The oldest section, that facing the village green known as The Plestor from the Old English language Saxon words pleg stow , meaning play space , dates from the third quarter of the 17th century. The roof incorporates fire blackened timbers which have been dated by dendrochronology to the early 14th century, and it is thought that they come from the house which previously stood on the site. A recent excavation of the cellar unearthed Tudor period Tudor bricks, which were also fire damaged and may therefore point to the fate of the house s predecessor. The second section of the house dates from 1783, according to a stone set into the upper storey. The mortar lines between the local malmstones of this section are studded with pieces of iron, a local characteristic known as galletting . The most recent addition came at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. It effectively filled in the square formed by the L shape of the two older wings. Attached to the house is an ancient building which was the first site of the village school. The school was originally endowed in 1728, under the will of the grandfather of Gilbert White , the early naturalist. The north east corner of the house appears in one of the plates in the first edition of Gilbert White s famous book, The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne 1789 . The house is now listed Grade II as being of architectural significance. It is an ancient structure, having been constructed during the reign of Sebbi of Essex St S bbi , a King of the East Saxons who ruled from 664 to 694. Speculation that the Strood was built by the Romans was disproved by the dating of some oak piles which were found in 1978 when a water main was being laid. This was the first early Saxon site in England to be dated using Dendrochronology . It is estimated that between 3,000 and 5,000 oak piles were used in the original construction a major undertaking for this period, probably associated with the Minster church minster at West Mersea ref http cat.essex.ac.uk reports EAS report 0023.pdf ref . History Aston Eyre Hall was built in the mid 14th century, probably for Alan de Charlton , who acquired the estate by marriage to Margery FitzAer and died in 1349. It consists of a hall range, with a service wing to the south west and a parlour cross wing to the north, and a detached gatehouse to the east, across what would have been an unusually large entrance court. The gatehouse has been incorporated into a farmhouse, but tree ring dendrochronology dating of the surviving timber floors have suggested a felling date of 1341 52. A large timber framed barn enclosing the courtyard on the north has been similarly dated to 1613. The hall dais was originally lit from a large window bay, which has been demolished although traces remain. There must have been a central hearth in the hall. Both the parlour wing and the south range had heated upper chambers. The narrow extension of the south range has several slit windows for storerooms, and excavations have revealed the footings of an equally narrow west range, no doubt also used for storage.
