This time period from 1000 BCE present is known as the Post archaic period Post archaic stage . Although this timeline segment may include some European or other world events that profoundly influenced later American life, it focuses on developments within Indigenous peoples of the Americas Native American communities. The archaeological records supplements indigenous recorded and oral history . Because of the inaccuracies inherent in radiocarbon dating and in interpreting other elements of the archaeological record, most dates in this timeline represent approximations that may vary a century or more from source to source. The assumptions implicit in archaeological dating methods may also yield a general bias in the dating in this timeline. List of events 1200 1400 Middle Mississippian culture in the Eastern Woodlands The Little Ice Age brought a period of severe decline to medieval Europe, causing the Great Famine of 1315 1317 Great Famine . The 14th century in America probably also brought decline of the Mississippian culture , especially in the northern states. Dendroclimatology suggests that severe droughts ravaged the American Southwest and especially the Southern Plains early in the period, leading to a rapid cultural decline. Athapaskan speaking people continue to migrate southward from the Canadian prairies toward the American Southwest . - Keith Briffa
notability Academics date October 2010 Professor Keith R. Briffa born 1952 is a climatologist employed since 1977 by the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia , of which he is currently deputy director. ref http www.cru.uea.ac.uk cru people ref In his professional work, he focuses on the climate change in late Holocene , with a special focus on northern portions of Europe and Asia . Briffa s preferred method is dendroclimatology , which is a set of procedures intended to decode information about the past climate from dendrology tree rings . Briffa helped develop data sets from trees from Canada, Fennoscandia, and northern Siberia which have been used in climate research. ref http www.uea.ac.uk env people facstaff briffak ref Selected publications cite journal title The spatial extent of 20th century warmth in the context of the past 1200  years author Osborn T.J. and K.R. From Keith Briffa Briffa 1998 ref Briffa K., Trees tell of past climates but are they speaking less clearly today? , Proceedings of the Royal Society , 1998 ref . The divergence problem is an anomaly from the field of dendroclimatology , the study of past climate through observations of old trees, primarily the properties of their annual growth rings. It is the disagreement between the temperatures measured by the thermometer s Instrumental temperature record instrumental temperatures and the temperatures reconstructed from the widths of tree rings in the far northern forests. While the thermometer records indicate a substantial warming trend, many tree rings do not display a corresponding change in their width. ref name Darrigo cite journal last D Arrigo first Rosanne last2 Wilson first2 Rob last3 Liepert first3 Beate last4 Cherubini first4 Paolo title On the Divergence Problem in Northern Forests A review of the tree ring evidence and possible causes journal Global and Planetary Change volume 60 pages 289 305 publisher Elsevier year 2008 url http www.ldeo.columbia.edu liepert pdf DArrigo etal.pdf doi 10.1016 j.gloplacha.2007.03.004 accessdate ref A temperature trend extracted from tree rings alone would not show any substantial warming. The temperature graphs calculated in these two ways thus diverge from one another since the 1950s, which is the origin of the term. Samples from southern forests do not exhibit this divergence, though this could be due to paucity of samples, and not all trees in the northern hemisphere do. Divergence is most common in the far northern hemisphere. Importance The deviati ... more details
