Officially known as Dene Estate , the area was laid out in 1959 and 1960, as one of the few housing developments not constructed by the local authority. The names of the local streets recall villages and valleys in the Lake District of Cumbria and Peak District of Derbyshire. Examples of this include Staveley Road, Martindale Avenue, Alston Crescent, and Dovedale Road the main road through the area. Recent expansions to the estate include The Square development on Shields Road, on the western edge of the estate. These executive homes are amongst the most expensive ever built in Sunderland, with some selling for 750,000. Amenities on the estate include two churches, a newsagent, an off licence, a takeaway, a sandwich shop, a beauty salon, a glass blower and a dental surgery. Educational facilities include a lower school, Seaburn Dene Primary, and the main secondary school for north eastern Sunderland, Monkwearmouth. Both schools are on Torver Crescent. There is also a public house called The Dene, on the corner of Dovedale Rd and Alston Crescent. Dene Olding born 11 October 1956 is an Australia n violin ist. He has had a distinguished career as a soloist in Australia, New Zealand and the United States , performing over forty concertos in recent years, including many world premieres. He is the concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra , first violinist in the Goldner String Quartet , and a member of the Australia Ensemble . Biography Dene Olding is the son of the husband and wife piano duo Max Olding and Pamela Page . In 1971, aged only 14, he attended the Juilliard School in New York as a scholarship student of Ivan Galamian and Margaret Pardee. He graduated in 1978. He attended master classes with Nathan Milstein and had further lessons with Herman Krebbers and Gy rgy Pauk . He joined the Australia Ensemble in 1982, and was also at that time leader of the Australian Chamber Orchestra . In 1985, he was awarded a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Churchill Fellowship to further his musical studies. During that year, he won a Bronze medal at the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition in Belgium . He was concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 1994, and again since 2002. He is also a frequent guest concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . Dene Olding is regularly heard as soloist with all the major Australian orchestras and has worked with conductors such as Edo de Waart , Stanis aw Skrowaczewski , Stuart Challender , Sir Charles Mackerras , Jorge Mester , G nther Herbig , Werner Andreas Albert and David Porcelijn .
