  1. Denti-alveolar consonant

Place of articulation In linguistics , a denti alveolar consonant is a consonant that is articulated with a flat tongue against the alveolar ridge and upper teeth, such as IPA t and IPA d but not IPA l or IPA n in languages such as Spanish and French. That is, a denti alveolar consonant is one that is alveolar consonant alveolar and laminal consonant laminal . Although denti alveolar consonants are often labeled as dental consonant dental , because only the forward contact with the teeth is visible, it is the rear most point of contact of the tongue that is most relevant, for this is what defines the maximum acoustic space of resonance and will give a consonant its characteristic sound. ref SOWL ref In the case of French language French , the rear most contact is alveolar or sometimes slightly pre alveolar. Spanish language Spanish IPA t and IPA d are laminal denti alveolar, ref Harvcoltxt Mart nez Celdr n et al. 2003 p 257 ref while IPA l and IPA n are alveolar though they assimilate to a following IPA t or IPA d . Similarly, Italian language Italian IPA t , IPA d , IPA t s , IPA d z are denti alveolar, while IPA l and IPA n are alveolar. ref Harvcoltxt Rogers d Arcangeli 2004 p 117 ref The dental click s are also laminal dental or alveolar. 1. Alveolar ridge

Image Places of articulation.svg thumb A sagittal or side view image of a human head. The upper alveolar ridge is located between numbers 4 and 5. An alveolar ridge IPAc en icon l v i . l r also known as the alveolar margin is one of the two jaw ridges either on the roof of the mouth between the upper teeth and the hard palate or on the bottom of the mouth behind the lower teeth. The alveolar ridges contain the sockets alveoli of the teeth. They can be felt with the tongue in the area right above the top teeth or below the bottom teeth. Its surface is covered with little ridges. Sounds made with the tongue touching the alveolar ridge while speaking are called alveolar. Examples of alveolar consonant s in English are, for instance, t , d , s , z , n , l like in the words time, dawn, silly, zoo, nasty and lollipop . There are exceptions to this however, such as speakers of the New York Accent who pronounce t and d at the back of their teeth. When pronouncing these sounds the tongue touches t , d , n , or nearly touches s , z the upper alveolar ridge which can also be referred to as gum ridge . In many other languages these same consonants are articulated slightly differently, and are often described as dental consonant s. In many languages consonants are articulated with the tongue touching or close to the upper alveolar ridge. The former are called alveolar plosives , and the latter alveolar fricatives . It is also referred to as the alveolar bone . In humans, the tooth bearing bones are the maxilla and the Human mandible mandible . The mineral content of alveolar bone is mostly hydroxyapatite , which is also found in Tooth enamel enamel as the main inorganic substance. On the maxilla, the alveolar process is a ridge on the Anatomical position Transverse plane inferior surface, and on the Human mandible mandible it is a ridge on the Anatomical position Transverse plane superior surface. It makes up the thickest part of the maxilla. The alveolar process contains a region of compact bone adjacent to the periodontal ligament called lamina dura .
