The Department of DefenseDictionary of Military and AssociatedTerms is a compendium of terminology used by the United States Department of Defense DOD . It sets forth standard US military and associated terminology to encompass the joint activity of the Armed Forces of the United States in both US joint and allied joint operations, as well as to encompass the Department of Defense DOD as a whole. These military and associatedterms, together with their definitions, constitute approved DOD terminology for general use by all components of the Department of Defense. The Secretary of Defense , by DOD Directive 5025.12, 23 August 1989, Standardization of Military and Associated Terminology, has directed its use throughout the Department of Defense to ensure standardization of military and associated terminology. This publication supplements standard English language dictionaries with standard terminology for military and associated use. However, it is not the intent of this publication to restrict the authority of the joint force commander JFC from organizing the force and executing the mission in a manner the JFC deems most appropriate to ensure unity of effort in the accomplishment of the overall mission. DoD Directive 2310 is a policy of the United States of America that concerns the enhanced interrogation treatment of enemy prisoners , particularly those classified as unlawful combatant s . The directive was modified in September 2006 in response to concerns about inhumane treatment of suspected Al Qaeda terrorists captured during the second Gulf War. It incorporates prohibitions against cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment. Interrogators may not force a detainee to be naked, perform sexual acts or pose in a sexual manner. They may not use hoods or place sacks over a detainee s head or use duct tape over his eyes. They may not beat or electrically shock or burn him or inflict other forms of physical pain, any form of physical pain. They may not use water boarding . They may not use hypothermia or treatment which might lead to heat injury. They may not perform mock execution s. They may not deprive detainees of the necessary food, water and medical care.
