Its roots contain rotenone , a strong insecticide and fish poison. File Derris scandens in Hyderabad, AP W IMG 4289.jpg thumb 250px left Derris scandens in Hyderabad, India . Also known as Derris powder, it was formerly used as an Organic farming organic insecticide used to control pests on crops such as peas. However, due to studies revealing its extreme toxicity, as well as due to the concentration level of rotenone to which the powder is often refined, experts in ecological and organic growing no longer consider it ecologically sound. Rotenone is still sold in the U.S., however. Derris root, when crushed, releases rotenone. Some New Guinea natives practice a form of fishing in which they crush the roots and throw them into the water. The stunned or killed fish float to the surface where they can be easily reached. In Indonesia these roots are called tuba . Despite its toxicity, Derris is used as a food plant by the larva e of numerous Lepidoptera species including Batrachedra Batrachedra amydraula . Plot Shiner explores three relationships in which some form of abuse is not only involved but savored. The central story involves Tony and Danny, two friends whose relationship changes once Danny discovers that he becomes sexually satisfied when Tony physically abuses him. Another storyline involves Tim, an out of work boxer who is being stalking stalked by Bob, a shy loner who still lives at home with his mother. It affects raspberry , blackberry and loganberry plants. It lays eggs on the flowers which hatch into pale brown larvae. They feed on the developing fruit, and the fruit will appear smaller and shriveled. ref name AG http www.agroatlas.ru en content pests Byturus tomentosus ref The Raspberry beetle has to be controlled in many locations by use of derris , a pesticide . This species is related to the Raspberry fruitworm B. urbanus which is native to North America . Economic significance The pest damages both wild and cultivated raspberries and also blackberries. The beetles eat portions of the flowers and young leaflets and lay their eggs between the stamens and pistils. The larvae tunnel in the developing fruit which remain small, become pale in colour, fade or rot. The larvae then drop to the soil and pupate underground.
