The Air defense experiments were a series of management science experiments performed between 1952 and 1954 by RAND Corporation s Systems Research Laboratory. The experiments were designed to provide information about organizational learning and how teams improved their performance through practice. Experiment structure The series was constructed from 4 different experiments code named Casey , Cowboy , Cobra , and Cogwheel . The first of these Casey used college students as crew for the air defense scenario whilst members of the United States Air Force were used in the latter experiments. Hortic. Soc. 26 1 32 ref German language German Versuche ber Pflanzen Hybriden was the result after years spent studying genetics genetic traits in pea plants. Mendel read his paper to the Natural History Society of Br nn Brno on February 8 and March 8, 1865. It was published in the Proceedings of the Natural History Society of Br nn the following year. In his paper, Mendel compared seven discrete characters Image Mendel seven characters.svg right The seven characteristics observed by Mendel Color and smoothness of the seeds grey and round or white and wrinkled Color of the cotyledons yellow or green Color of the flowers white or violet Shape of the pods full or constricted Color of unripe pods yellow or green Position of flowers and pods on the stems Height of the plants short or tall Through experimentation, Mendel discovered that one inheritable trait would invariably be dominant to its recessive alternative. This model, later known as Mendelian inheritance or Mendelian genetics, provided an alternative to blending inheritance, which was the prevailing theory at the time. Mendel s work received little attention from the scientific community and was largely forgotten. The Directorate for Studies and Experiments Italian acronym it DSSE Target DSSE was an aeronautic tests centre established in the 30 s at Montecelio, near Rome. It took over the patrimony of experience gathered by the Italian Royal Airforce on the location since the end of World War I. In the 20 s the centre facilities already included a wind tunnel. Around the DSSE soon a new town developed, Guidonia. In the last years before the outbreak of World War Ii, DSSE grew into a world known aeronautics testing ground. At the Directorate for Studies and Experiments there were many advanced facilities, such as one of the first wind tunnels , an ultrasonic tunnel , the weightlessness simulator called pneumatic tank for high altitude and a centrifugal apparatus to study loss of orientation in space. Many of these tools were used by the Center for Studies and Research in Aeronautical Medicine research and anticipated more advanced technological equipment to be employed later In that field and Space activities at large. in Space Medicine. The more outstanding examples are the flight simulator provided with a cycle ergonometer, the centrifugal device, the pressurized suit and the airtight cabin these last two pieces of equipment were used by Mario Pezzi to attain his altitude records in the 40 s. DSSE was meant to become the only State Agency devoted to aeronautics research coordinating private firms too, such as Savoia Marchetti , Caproni , Fiat , CANT and others, in order to avoid overlapping and attain maximum efficiency. DSSE collected as well foreign data on aeronautic matters and overlooked military and university research. The aim was to become a unique collector of experiences and information such as to promote the Italian Royal Airforce as world leader. The experiments of Rayleigh and Brace 1902, 1904 were aimed to show whether length contraction leads to birefringence or not. They were some of the first optical experiments measuring the relative motion of Earth and the luminiferous aether which were sufficiently precise to detect magnitudes of second order to v c. The results were negative, which was of great importance for the development of the Lorentz transformation and consequently of the theory of relativity . See also Tests of special relativity . The experiments To explain the negative outcome of the Michelson Morley experiment , George FitzGerald 1889 and Hendrik Lorentz 1892 introduced the Length contraction contraction hypothesis , according to which a body is contracted during its motion through the stationary Luminiferous aether aether . John William Strutt, 3rd Baron Rayleigh Lord Rayleigh 1902 interpreted this contraction as a mechanical compression which should lead to optical anisotropy of materials, so the different Refractive index refraction indices would cause birefringence . To measure this effect, he installed a tube of 76  cm length upon a rotatable table. The tube was closed by glass at its ends, and was filled with carbon bisulphide or water, and the liquid was between two nicol prism s. Through the liquid, light produced by an electric lamp and more importantly by limelight was sent to and fro. However, before he can do so, Peyton wishes to make certain that the slaves in his charge will be happy in their new found freedom, and so decides to conduct three separate experiments to test this. In turn, Peyton sends his slaves to a farm in the Southern United States , an industrial town in the Northern United States , and finally to Canada .
