  1. Tongan religion

Orphan date June 2011 copy edit date June 2011 Though it is no longer practiced today, the ancient religion of Tonga was once alive in the kingdom with over 2000 years of history. It was when missionaries arrived and persuaded King George Tupou I to convert into Christianity , that he strictly enforced that all Tongans be Christians resulting in the complete Christianization of the country. It was a polytheistic religion with the supreme god being Tangaloa. Gods and deities Pulotu Pulotu was the unseen world, the domain of the god or goddess Hikule o was believed to be reached by sea. A number of stories are told of journeys to Pulotu . Most Tongans might identify Pulotu with the underworld, Lolofonua . Pulotu is also identified by some informants with the cemetery or graveyard. Anciently, it was thought that Pulotu would be visited by a man to recover a dead wife. Hikule o would then assemble the spirits so the wife may be chosen, also that he may re animate the visitor, so that he may return to the earth. Two entrances are pointed out by Tongans who identify Pulotu as the equivalent of the underworld. One of them consists of a deep hole on the island of Koloa, Vava u . Ahole which mythology says was the opening from which Maui Kisikisi brought fire from the underworld to this world. The second opening was said to be the through the island of Tofua . There are three divisions of Pulotu called Pulotu Tete , Pulotu Aka aka , and Pulotu Tu uma u . Tangaloa Tangaloa , the sky god, is regarded in Vava u as being the deity who hauled up the islands of the Vava u group, his fish hook catching in what is now the island of Hunga . The attribution by the Vava u people of this great act to Tangaloa instead of Maui is perhaps due to the special development of Tangaloa worship in Vava ... http hbs.bishopmuseum.org pubs online bpbm bulletins.html Categories Category Religion in Tonga Category Articles created via the Article Wizard Tonga stub religion stub ...   more details
