  1. Critique of technology

Critique of technology is an analysis of the negative impacts of technologies. It is argued that, in all advanced industrial societies not necessarily only capitalist ones , technology becomes a means of domination, control and exploitation, or more generally something which threatens the survival of humanity. Prominent authors elaborating a critique of technology are, e.g.. Jacques Ellul , Ivan Illich , Langdon Winner , Joseph Weizenbaum , Theodore Roszak scholar Theodore Roszak , Neil Postman and Lewis Mumford . In the 1970s in the US, the critique of technology became the basis of a new political perspective called anarcho primitivism , which was forwarded by thinkers such as Fredy Perlman , John Zerzan , and David Watson anarchist David Watson . They proposed differing theories about how it was industrial society, and not capitalism as such, that was at the root of contemporary social problems. This theory was developed in the journal Fifth Estate in the 1970s and 1980s, and was influenced by the Frankfurt School , the Situationist International , Jacques Ellul and others. The critique of technology overlaps with the philosophy of technology but whereas the latter tries to establish itself as an academic discipline the critique of technology is basically a political project, not limited to academia . It features prominently in neomarxism Herbert Marcuse and Andrew Feenberg , ecofeminism Vandana Shiva and in Postdevelopment Theory postdevelopment Ivan Illich Further reading Michael Adas, Machines as the Measure of Men Science, Technology, and Ideologies of Western Dominance , Cornell University Press 1990 Jacques Ellul , The Technological Society , Trans. 1. Roll's critique

Roll s critique is a famous analysis of the validity of empirical tests of the Capital Asset Pricing Model CAPM . It concerns methods to formally test the statement of the CAPM, the equation math E R i R f beta im E R m R f . , math This equation relates the asset expected return math E R i math to the asset covariance math beta im math with the market portfolio return math R m math . The market return is defined as the wealth weighted sum of all investment returns in the economy. Roll s critique makes two statements regarding the market portfolio 1. Mean Variance Tautology Any mean variance efficient portfolio math R p math satisfies the CAPM equation exactly math E R i R f beta ip E R p R f , math . Mean variance efficiency of the market portfolio is equivalent to the CAPM equation holding. This statement is a mathematical fact, requiring no model assumptions. Given a proxy for the market portfolio, testing the CAPM equation is equivalent to testing mean variance efficiency of the portfolio. The CAPM is tautological if the market is assumed to be mean variance efficient. http matthewcpollard.googlepages.com meanvariance.pdf Proof of Mean Variance Tautology . 2. The Market Portfolio is Unobservable The market portfolio in practice would necessarily include every single possible available asset, including real estate, precious metals, stamp collections, jewelry, and anything with any worth. The returns on all possible investments opportunities are unobservable. From statement 1, validity of the CAPM is equivalent to the market being mean variance efficient with respect to all .... 1. Lucas critique

The Lucas critique , named for Robert Lucas, Jr. Robert Lucas work on macroeconomic policymaking, argues that it is na ve to try to predict the effects of a change in economic policy entirely on the basis of relationships observed in historical data, especially highly Aggregate data aggregated historical data. citation needed date February 2012 The basic idea pre dates Lucas contribution related ideas are expressed as Campbell s Law and Goodhart s Law , but in a 1976 paper Lucas drove home the point that this simple notion invalidated policy advice based on conclusions drawn from large scale macroeconometric model s. Because the parameters of those models were not structural, i.e. not policy invariant, they would necessarily change whenever policy the rules of the game was changed. Policy conclusions based on those models would therefore potentially be misleading. This argument called into question the prevailing large scale econometric models that lacked foundations in dynamic economic theory. Lucas summarized his critique Given that the structure of an econometric model consists of optimal decision rules of economic agents, and that optimal decision rules vary systematically with changes in the structure of series relevant to the decision maker, it follows that any change in policy will systematically alter the structure of econometric models. ref Lucas 1976 , p. 41. ref The Lucas critique suggests that if we want to predict the effect of a policy experiment, we should model ... effects of the policy change. citation needed date February 2012 The Lucas critique ... models. citation needed date February 2012 Examples One important application of the critique is its ... last Meltzer editor2 first A. year 1976 chapter Econometric Policy Evaluation A Critique title The Phillips ... 1. McCloskey critique

primarysources date December 2010 The McCloskey critique refers to a critique of post 1940s official modernist methodology in economics , inherited from logical positivism in philosophy. The critique maintains that the methodology neglects how economics can be done, is done, and should be done to advance the subject. Its recommendations include use of good rhetorical devices for disciplined conversation. ref Deirdre McCloskey McCloskey, D.N. 1983 . The Rhetoric of Economics, Journal of Economic Literature 31 2 , pp. 482 504. ref Substance Deirdre McCloskey s 1986 book The Rhetoric of Economics argues that The Mathematization of Economics Was a Good Idea , but that economic modernism took equilibrium economic model model building and econometrics especially Existence theorem existence theorem mathematics, and statistical significance absurdly far. Roughly speaking McCloskey wants economics to make interesting, new, and true statements about the real world, and argues that proving the hypothetical possibility of an effect within an analytical framework is not a constructive way of doing this. Although the conventional way of connecting the economic model with the world is through econometric analysis, she citation cites many examples in which professors of econometrics were able to use the same data to both prove and disprove the applicability of a model s conclusions. She argues that the vast efforts expended by economists on Economic model analytical equations is essentially wasted effort. In Ask what the boys in the Sandbox Will Have , McCloskey identified the economists whom she accuses of leading economics astray in the 1940s Paul Samuelson In her view, Samuelson wanted economics to resemble more closely the hard sciences especially physics , and elevated the vice of blackboard proofs and other mathematical but not necessarily scientific values to accomplish this.
