File Karl Liebknecht.jpg thumb right 180px Karl Liebknecht File Rosa Luxemburg.jpg thumb right 180px Rosa Luxemburg The German newspaper Die Rote Fahne The Red Flag was created on 9 November 1918 by Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg in Berlin , first as organ of the left wing revolutionary Spartacus League Spartakusbund . After the founding of the Communist Party of Germany KPD on 1 January 1919 it became the central publication of the party, until 1945. Outlawed after the end of the Weimar Republic and the Reichstag fire in 1933, it was illegally distributed during the Nazism Nazi dictatorship by underground groups close to the Communist Party until 1942. Since the 1970s, a number of projects by different left wing socialist groupings or small parties tried to publish Die Rote Fahne again. Presently, at least two internet publications use the name, claiming to be the successor of the historical newspaper. The painting was made by marking equal subdivisions along the sides, bottom and top edges of the canvas and using these intervals to generate simple, symmetrical patterns comprising bands of black enamel paint separated by thin lines of unpainted canvas. Frank Stella gave this black painting a provocative title. Die Fahne Hoch is named after the anthem of the Nazi Party , the Horst Wessel Lied , and is one of several paintings in the series that make direct reference to Nazism . By applying a hotly emotive title to the image, Stella s ironic purpose was that of destabilizing the idea of meaning itself. As such, the Island is part of Berlin s 7th administrative borough , Tempelhof Sch neberg . Overview On the Berlin city map, the neighborhood is easily located within the distinctive triangle formed by railroad tracks in the south western part of the city center. Owing to the large trenches dug to accommodate these tracks for trains and light rail, the only way to access this part of Sch neberg is by crossing one of the many bridges that span the tracks, thus forming the area into an island. Additionally, the comparative isolation from the adjoining parts of Berlin is also an important reason for the area s being considered insular it is therefore not an island in the conventional sense, i.e., surrounded by water . The neighborhood is especially notable for its peculiar history, being very indicative of the sharp contrasts that modern History of Germany German history since 1871 abounds with. Up until the end of World War I , roughly half of the Island s territory was characterized by its extensive use by the Prussia n army, whereas the other half was a pronouncedly working class residential district, dominated by voters of left wing parties hence the red .
