Richard Strauss operas DieschweigsameFrau The Silent Woman is an opera in three acts by Richard Strauss with libretto by Stefan Zweig after Ben Jonson s Epicoene, or the Silent Woman . Performance history It was first performed at the Dresden Semperoper on 24 June 1935, conducted by Karl B hm . A work of great charm when well cast and performed, it has nevertheless proved one of Strauss less successful operas. Strauss association with a Jewish librettist in 1935 Germany provoked a hostile response from Adolf Hitler Hitler and Joseph Goebbels Goebbels , and even after the war, it has enjoyed relatively few revivals. The work had its United States premiere at the New York City Opera on October 7, 1958. It was performed at the Santa Fe Opera in 1987 and 1991, and also at Garsington Opera in 2003. It is no longer included in the book since the second edition. It seems to be based on the legend of Wilgefortis Saint Wilgefortis . Synopsis Once upon a time, there was a princess who was very devoted to her religion. The virgin vowed to God that she would never marry anyone. Her father was opposed to that. Then she prayed to the God, wishing for a beard to grow on her face. Her prayer was answered, but the King decided to crucify her. She became a saint and people had placed her statue in a church. One day, a poor musician knelt down to pray in front of the statue. The Saint was very happy and she gave him a golden boot. The musicians happily brought the boot home. Later, however, a notice came out that one side of the golden boots had been missing. They found it on the musician and arrested him. The musician begged them to bring him to the church.
