The Measure of the Rule is a 1907 coming of age novel about a country teacher who migrates to the city to study engineering, but is forced by dint of circumstance to go to a teacher s training college, where he meets his wife to be. Written by the one time Detroit Free Press journalist Robert Barr writer Robert Barr known in the Press as Luke Sharp it is both an indictment of an age gone by in which discipline and religion slide towards perversion and voyeurism, and a reminiscence of an innocent time before the great conflicts of the twentieth century, a time in which respect, delicacy and modesty prevailed in the relationships between man and woman, student and teacher. A complex and forgotten masterpiece of observation, whimsy and melodrama, it is reminiscent both of Mark Twain and Booth Tarkington . novel stub DEFAULTSORT Measure of the Rule, The Category Canadian novels Category 1907 novels Category Canadian bildungsromans ...   more details

  1. Westover, Hampshire

coord 50.722 1.879 display title region GB scale 100000 Westover , Hampshire , was the ancient manor, now in Dorset , over which much of modern Bournemouth has developed. This area of land marked a historic boundary between Celtic and Saxon civilisations, which found expression as the county boundary between Hampshire to the east and Dorset to the west. It is likely that the River Stour, Dorset Dorset Stour marked the boundary at one time, and that the name Westover derived from the term west bank. Westover was a liberty division liberty which meant that whoever owned it gained certain extra rights by dint of their possession. 1. Prewar Gibson banjo

The prewar Gibson Guitar Corporation Gibson Mastertone banjo is an old banjo. Terminology Although this term normally refers to World War II , when used to describe Gibson banjos the term prewar operationally refers to banjos made prior to 1947. Production of metal banjo parts was suspended during World War II. However, small numbers of Gibson banjos continued to be constructed and shipped during the war years using stocks of metal parts remaining in factory bins. For that reason, Gibson banjos produced between 1940 and 1945 often reflect creativity of shop personnel rather than standard catalog descriptions. Production of metal banjo parts resumed in the Fall of 1946 however it is commonly believed that the metal composition of foundry products delivered to Gibson after World War II was inferior to that of parts produced prior to 1940. On April 12, 1947 the Gibson Instrument Company changed their corporate logo from script lettering to use of block letters and this change occurred sufficiently close to resumption of banjo output to allow easy identification of prewar and postwar Gibson instruments. Identifying a prewar Gibson banjo Determining the provenance authenticity of a prewar Gibson banjo can be a real challenge, for a variety of reasons The Gibson company produced a fairly wide variety of prewar gibson banjo styles styles . Prewar Gibson banjos frequently failed to conform to the standard catalog specifications, by dint of cost saving measures to diminish inventories of excess or less than desirable components, thus casting doubt on the deviant banjo s authenticity. The actual number of authentic banjos is relatively small, so the experience of examining and playing them is limited to comparatively few individuals.
