He became an adviser to John II of Portugal King John II of Portugal and later Manuel I of Portugal Manuel I , being successively appointed Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tanger Bishop of Tanger 1491 1500 , Ceuta Bishop of Ceuta 1500 1504 and Bishop of Viseu 1505 1519 . During his rule, he led a comprehensive artistic remodelling of Viseu Cathedral . Ortiz advised the Portuguese kings on matters related to astronomy and navigation during the Age of Discovery . Manuel I named him tutor of his heir, future John III of Portugal . Ortiz taught on the writings of Cato the Elder Cato , Terence , Virgil , Sallust and some parts of the Bible , the theory of the planets and some elementary matters about astrology he heard from Tom s de Torres , an eminent doctor and astrologer of that time. Diogo de Teive was a Humanism humanist , a latinist and a typical scholar of his day a traveller, who spent most of his formative years abroad, in Europe. He would return to Portugal with Andr de Gouveia , George Buchanan and Jo o da Costa , thanks to the initiative of King John III. Buchanan, Jo o da Costa and Diogo de Teive were accused of Protestantism by the Inquisition, and sentenced to imprisonment in 1550. Nonetheless, Teive did not leave the country, and he remained close to the Portuguese royal family and to the court, as a scholar and a clergyman. He died after 1569.     for the scholar Diogo de Teive humanist Diogo de Teive was a captain and squire to the House of Henry the Navigator Infante D. Henrique during the Portugal Portuguese period of discovery. On January 1, 1451 he disembarked on the island of Terceira in the Azores from which he made his base. He realized two voyages of exploration to the West of the archipelago which then only included the Central and Eastern group . In 1452, at the end of his second voyage, he discovered the islands of Flores Island Azores Flores and Corvo Island Corvo , which he initially believed were a new archipelago, naming them the Ilhas Floreiras or literally, the Flowered Islands , due to the abundance of flowering plants. On December 5, 1452, for his discovery, he was given a concession in the sugar cane industry on the island of Madeira by Infante D. Henrique. Some historians claim that he was responsible for the disappearance of the first Captain Major of the Captaincy of Flores, although unproven.
