Image Division I Basketball independents map3.png right 210px National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA Division I NCAA Division I independent basketball schools are four year institutions that do not belong to a basketball conference or a primary conference for all sports teams. With Seattle, Nebraska Omaha and Longwood all accepting invitations to join conferences for the 2012 2013 academic year, Cal State Bakersfield could become the only Division I independent next year. As well, with the NCAA passing legislation requiring schools transitioning to Division I to obtain conference membership before being able to make the move, Cal State Bakersfield could potentially become the last team to ever hold independent status. The University of New Orleans was somewhat transtitioning to Division II, but has since changed its mind and trying to stay a Division I school.
