  1. On the Dnieper

Use dmy dates date October 2011 On the Dnieper , Op. 51, lang ru link no , also known by its French language title Sur le Borysth ne , is Sergei Prokofiev s fourth ballet, written in 1930. Background Sergei Diaghilev , the impresario who had led Ballets Russes to distinguished success, died suddenly in 1929, hence ending Prokofiev s collaboration with the troupe. The Prodigal Son Prokofiev The Prodigal Son was the last such collaboration . Seeing the success of the work, the Ballet de l Op ra National de Paris Paris Op ra commissioned Prokofiev to write another ballet. Serge Lifar , formerly a close associate with Diaghilev, was responsible for creating the setting and choreography. However, he did not place any significance to the scenario. Rather, the ballet was created as a sequence of dances. On the Dnieper was the result of this collaboration. Lifar, in his 1965 book La danse , said that he was disappointed with Prokofiev s score. Lifar claimed to have been inspired by Russian folkdance but acknowledges that critics found his own choreography insufficiently Russian. Preparations for the ballet were marked the sudden withdrawal of Olga Spessivtseva who was to have had the leading female role. Spessivsteva had had a series of successes with Lifar at the Ballet de l Op ra National de Paris Paris Opera Ballet Promethee , Giselle and had unrequited feelings for him. In his book The Three Graces Anna Pavlova, Tamara Karsavina, Olga Spessivtseva 1959 Lifar describes how their personal situation came to a head during rehearsals. 1. Middle Dnieper culture

more footnotes date February 2012 Bronze Age The Middle Dnieper culture is an eastern extension of the Corded Ware culture , ca. 3200&mdash 2300 BC of northern Ukraine and Belarus. As the name indicates, it was centered on the middle reach of the Dnieper River and is contemporaneous with the latter phase and then a successor to the Indo European languages Indo European Yamna culture , as well as to the latter phase of the Tripolye culture . Geographically it is directly behind the area occupied by the Globular Amphora culture south and east , and while commencing a little later and lasting a little longer, it is otherwise contemporaneous with it. More than 200 sites are attested to, mostly as barrow inhumation s under tumuli some of these burials are secondary depositions into Yamna era kurgans . Grave goods included pottery and stone battle axes. There is some evidence of cremation in the northerly area. Settlements seem difficult to define the economy was much like that of the Yamna and Corded Ware cultures, semi to fully nomadic pastoralism. ref J. P. Mallory , Middle Dnieper Culture , Encyclopedia of Indo European Culture , Fitzroy Dearborn, 1997. ref Within the context of the Kurgan hypothesis of Marija Gimbutas , this culture is a major center for migrations or invasions, if you prefer from the Yamna culture and its immediate successors into Northern and Central Europe. It has been argued that the area where the Middle Dnieper culture is situated would have provided a better migration route for steppe tribes along the Pripyat River Pripyat tributary of the Dnieper and perhaps provided the cultural bridge between Yamna and Corded Ware cultures. Image European Late Neolithic.gif thumb 400px The Dnieper Donets culture marked orange in the context of early 4th millennium Europe. The Dnieper Donets culture ca. 5th&mdash 4th millennium BC was a Neolithic New Stone Age culture in the area north of the Black Sea Sea of Azov between the Dnieper and Donets River. There are parallels with the contemporaneous Samara culture . The Dnieper Donets culture was succeeded by the Yamna culture . Overview It was a hunter gatherer culture that made the transition to early agriculture. The economic evidence from the earliest stages is almost exclusively from hunting and fishing. ref name Mallory1 J. P. Mallory 1989 , In Search of the Indo Europeans, p. 190 191 ref Inhumation was in grave pits, with the deceased being covered in ochre . Burial was sometimes individual, but larger groupings are more common, with burials being done sequentially in the same grave. There are parallels with the contemporaneous Samara culture , and a larger horizon from the lower half of Dnieper to the mid to lower Volga has been drawn, particularly by the advocates of the Kurgan hypothesis as expounded by Marija Gimbutas . Dmitry Telegin ru , ru assigns them to a broad cultural region that spanned the Vistula in Poland southeast to the Dnieper. Mallory includes this area within the limits of the Proto Indo Europeans. The Inhulets has its source in the Dnieper highlands near the city of Kirovohrad in the Ukrainian Oblast province of Kirovohrad Oblast Kirovohrad , about 30  km away from the Dnieper river itself, with which it flows parallel to. It is 162  km in length and flows through the city of Irpin city Irpin . The location where Irpin enters the Dnieper river falls into the Kiev Reservoir which the Dnieper forms because of the Kiev Hydro Electric Power Plant dam . Thus, the Dnieper water level at this location is lifted artificially by about 6.5 7 meters above the natural level. Therefore, the water of Irpin is pumped into the Kiev Reservoir by powerful electrical pumps, making Irpin the river that literally flows upwards . The lands around Irpen were the heartland of Kievan Rus and the chronicle s mention the river in connection with several important historic events, such as the Battle on the Irpen River of 1321 in which the Grand Duke of Lithuania Gediminas Gedemin gained control over the lands of what is now central Ukraine.
