Notability date September 2011 Unreferenced date September 2011 The DTJ BBS Does The Job Bulletin Board System was a program for the Commodore 64 written by Andrew Bernhardt. The first version was released in 1985, and sold for 35. There were forty DTJ systems before the software changed to freeware in 1989. the software spread more rapidly as freeware but I have no statistics as there was no obligation to register the program DTJ BBS was loosely based on the Citadel software Citadel family of general discussion systems. Its primary function was a public message board, although it did support other features such as email and file transfers. Like Citadel, it used the metaphor of rooms to contain messages, and the system responded to many of the same menu commands. DTJ was written for speed and ease of use. No Commodore specific features such as graphics were supported. This was intended to make the system appealing to users all computer types. The BBS was successful in this regard. DTJ systems tended to have a more diverse user base. Many users were surprised to find out that the software was not running on an IBM PC but on a toy computer. DTJ BBS had a freeform text editor that did not use line numbers. The user was encouraged not to press RETURN or ENTER except at the end of paragraphs so that the message could word wrap to the reader s video width. The content of the text editor was non volatile, meaning the user could exit the editor at any time and come back later to finish ... the user s status or performed other actions accordingly. 1. Celerity BBS

Unreferenced date December 2009 Celerity BBS was a descendant of the freely distributed source of TCS BBS 1.43, and ultimately nearly completely rewritten. 1. Mike's BBS

MBBS Mike s BBS was a popular Bulletin board system BBS system in the Nordic countries during the mid 1990s. It was created by a team of Oslo based enthusiasts, led by Mike Robertson programmer Mike Robertson . As many BBS systems of that era, it was only available for the DOS platform. Since one process could only handle one node, computer multitasking multitaskers such as DESQview or Microsoft Windows were necessary in order to run multi node BBSes. MBBS had to use the only viable means of interprocess communication under DOS, namely to read and write to a set of files in a common subdirectory. Since these files were accessed very often, many SysOp s moved them to a RAM disk . MBBS user interface was a command line interface where commands could be stacked . This means that instead of typing a command, being asked to supply some parameters, and then typing another command, one could type them on one command line separated by a space or semicolon. An example is code m sa g y code , which expands to marks, save message pointers, goodbye, yes . This user interface was copied in Kim Heino s later BBBS software BBBS system, to the degree that most valid MBBS command strings do the same in BBBS. MBBS was released as uncrippled shareware by Gallagher & Robertson . It is now discontinued, and its final version, 10.4, was released in 1996. Mike s BBS was also the name of the MBBS run BBS, operated by Mike Robertson, which in many ways served as a social hub of the Norwegian BBS community of the 1990s. 1. Spitfire (BBS)

SPITFIRE BBS is a DOS based Bulletin Board System written by Mike Woltz, published by his company Buffalo Creek Software of West Des Moines, Iowa. SPITFIRE was written in Turbo Pascal with Assembly Language routines. It was released in 1987 under the Shareware concept and had a moderate sized fanbase, only outnumbered by products such as RemoteAccess , TriBBS , PCBoard , Major BBS , and Wildcat BBS . It was possible to run multiple nodes of SPITFIRE under Microsoft Windows and OS 2 although, most SysOp s preferred to use Quarterdeck s DESQview for this purpose. SPITFIRE interfaced with message relaying systems such as FidoNet through 3rd party utilities such as SHILOH, a QWK networking interfacing program, and BCSUTI, a Postlink style networking interface. SPITFIRE s most successful release Version 3.2 came in 1992, just before the World Wide Web exploded on the scene. By 1994, many SysOps began converting from running BBSes to becoming Internet Service Provider s. Mr. Woltz was greatly admired by loyal SysOps, but was known for being somewhat stubborn. Due to his unwillingness to add Internet connectivity to the software, SPITFIRE s usage dwindled significantly throughout the United States. It was and is still used throughout the world, particularly in countries where high speed Internet access is unavailable or banned. However, due to advances in technology, SPITFIRE can be run as a telnet BBS by using a virtual FOSSIL driver and TELNET telnet engine SIO VMODEM under OS 2 , NetFoss , NetSerial or NetModem under Microsoft Windows Windows . SPITFIRE version 3.6 was updated in 1999 for Y2K compliance. Current release is SPITFIRE 3.7 as of 1 January 2010 which is still supported by Buffalo Creek Software today.
