  1. Domangart Réti

Domangart R ti was king of D l Riata in the early 6th century, following the death of his father, Fergus M r . He had at least two sons Comgall mac Domangairt Comgall and Gabr n mac Domangairt Gabr n , both of whom became kings in succession. The Tripartite Life of St. Patrick states that he was present at the death of the saint, circa 493. Domangart died around 507 and was succeeded by Comgall. His byname, R ti, appears in Adomn n s Life of Saint Columba , in the form Corcu R ti , perhaps a synonym for D l Riata. Corcu, a Primitive Irish language term for a kin group, usually combined with the name of a divine or mythical ancestor, is apparently similar to the term D l. Alternatively, rather that representing an alternative name for all of D l Riata, it has been suggested Corcu R ti was the name given to the kin group which later divided to form the Cen l nGabr in of Kintyre and the Cen l Comgaill of Cowal , thus excluding the Cen l n engusa of Islay and the Cen l Loairn of middle and northern Argyll . 1. Domangart mac Domnaill

Domangart mac Domnaill died 673 was a king in D l Riata modern western Scotland and the son of Domnall Brecc . It is not clear whether he was over king of D l Riata or king of the Cen l nGabr in . Domangart is not listed by the Duan Albanach but is included in other sources, such as genealogies of William I of Scotland William the Lion , and that of Constantine III of Scotland Causant n mac Cuil n found with the Senchus fer n Alban . In these genealogies he is noted as the father of Eochaid mac Domangairt . The Annals of Ulster for 673 report The killing of Domangart, son of Domnall Brecc, the king of D l Riata. Some king lists state that in his time the Cen l Comgaill separated from the Cen l nGabr in. It is not clear who succeeded Domangart as king of D l Riata, if he was such, or as king of the Cen l nGabr in. Known kings after Domangart include M el D in mac Conaill and Domnall Donn of the Cen l nGabr in and Ferchar Fota of the Cen l Loairn is assigned a long reign of 21 years by the Duan Albanach and other king lists, and this would place the beginning of his rule close to the death of Domangart. Conall Crandomna was king of D l Riata modern western Scotland from about 650 until 660. The Senchus fer n Alban makes him a son of Eochaid Buide and thus a member of the Cen l nGabr in . The Duan Albanach has him succeed Ferchar mac Connaid of the Cen l Comgaill , which had not yet separated from the Cen l nGabr in. He was co ruler with D nchad mac Conaing until 654, after which he was apparently sole ruler. His sons M el D in mac Conaill and Domnall Donn may have been kings of D l Riata. 1. Eochaid Buide

Eochaid Buide was king of D l Riata from around 608 until 629. Buide refers to the colour yellow, as in the colour of his hair. He was a younger son of ed n mac Gabr in and became his father s chosen heir upon the death of his elder brothers. Adomn n of Iona Adomn n s Life of Saint Columba has Columba foresee that Eochaid, then a child, will succeed his father in preference to his adult brothers Art r, Eochaid Find and Domangart. In the last two years of his reign, 627&ndash 629, Eochaid was apparently co ruler with Connad Cerr , who predeceased him. Eochaid was followed by his son Domnall Brecc . Eochaid s other sons named by the Senchus fer n Alban are Conall Crandomna , Failbe who died at the Battle of Fid Eoin , C cen m thair whose death is reported in the Annals of Ulster for 604 , Conall Bec, Connad or Conall Cerr who may be the same person as Connad Cerr who died at Fid Eoin , Failbe, Domangart and Domnall Donn not the same person as Domnall Donn unless his obituary is misplaced by 45 years like that of Ferchar mac Connaid According to the Fled D in na nG d , Eochaid Buide was the grandfather of Congal C ech . The story has anachronistic features as it has Eochaid alive at the time of the battle of Mag Rath securely dated to within a year of 637 , but it is chronologically feasible that Congal C ech could have been the son of Eochaid s daughter if the identification of C cen m thair and the dating of his death is correct. He was a member of the Cen l nGabr in , the son of Domangart mac Domnaill and father of Eochaid mac Echdach Alp n mac Echdach may also be a son of this Eochaid. He is named in D l Riata king lists, the Duan Albanach and the Synchronisms of Flann Mainistrech . In some sources he is called Eochaid Crook Nose Riannamail , but modern readings take this is a being a garbled reference to Fiannamail ua D nchado rather than an epithet . The killing of Eochu nepos Domnaill , Eochaid grandson of Domnall Brecc , is reported in the Annals of Ulster for 697. 1. Ferchar Fota

Ferchar Fota Ferchar the Tall died c. 697 was probably king of the Cen l Loairn of D l Riata , and perhaps of all D l Riata. His father is named as Feredach mac Fergusa and he was said to be a descendant in the 6th generation of Loarn mac Eirc . Ferchar is first reported in the Annals of Tigernach in 678, when he led the Cen l Loairn to defeat on Tiree against the Britons , presumably those of Kingdom of Strathclyde Alt Clut . The battle is also reported by the Annals of Ulster , but Ferchar is not named. The second report of Ferchar is that of his death in 697. Ferchar may have been king of D l Riata from the 670s &mdash the Duan Albanach assigns him a reign of 21 years &mdash or he may have become king of D l Riata only on the death of Domnall Donn in 696. His sons Ainbcellach mac Ferchair Ainbcellach and Selbach mac Ferchair Selbach were kings of D l Riata and his descendants included Macbeth of Scotland Mac Bethad mac Findl ich William Shakespeare Shakespeare s Macbeth . citation needed date August 2010 References Alan Orr Anderson Anderson, Alan Orr , Early Sources of Scottish History A.D 500&ndash 1286 , volume 1. 1. Máel Dúin mac Conaill

M el D in mac Conaill died 688 was a king in D l Riata modern western Scotland . He was the son of Conall Crandomna . His death is reported by the Annals of Ulster , but without mention of a title. He is among the kings named by the Duan Albanach , following his brother Domnall Donn , which assigns him an improbable reign of 17 years. The general confusion of the sources makes any conclusion difficult, but while it is likely that M el D in was co ruler, with his brother Domnall Donn, of the Cen l nGabr in lands in Kintyre , it is not likely that M el D in and Domnall were high kings of D l Riata. Whether the lands of the Cen l nGabr in were subject to Ecgfrith of Northumbria , or whether they were dominated by Ferchar Fota of the Cen l Loairn , cannot be said with certainty. Domnall Brecc Welsh Dyfnwal Frych English Donald the Freckled d. 642 in River Carron Forth Strathcarron was king of D l Riata , in modern Scotland , from about 629 until 642. He was the son of Eochaid Buide . He first appears in 622, when the Annals of Tigernach report his presence at the battle of Cend Delgthen probably in the east midlands of Ireland as an ally of Conall Guthbinn of Clann Cholm in . This is the only battle known where Domnall Brecc fought on the winning side. Domnall suffered four defeats after he broke D l Riata s alliance with the Cen l Conaill clan of the U N ill . In Ireland , Domnall and his ally Congal C ech of the D l nAraidi were defeated by Domnall mac edo of the Cen l Conaill , the High King of Ireland , at the Battle of Mag Rath Moira, County Down in 637. He also lost to the Picts in 635 and 638 and lastly to Eugein I of Alt Clut at Strathcarron in 642, where he was killed. A stanza interpolated into the early 9th Century Welsh poem Y Gododdin refers to these events blockquote I saw an array that came from Kintyre Pentir , br And bore themselves splendidly around the conflagration. br I saw a second one, rapidly descending from their township, br Who had risen at the word of the grandson of Nwython. ref Eugein was the grandson of Nwython Neithon of Alt Clut Neithon . ref br I saw great sturdy men who came with the dawn, br And the head of Dyfnwal Frych, ravens gnawed it. blockquote Domnall s son Domangart mac Domnaill was later to be king of D l Riata and from him the later kings of the Cen l nGabr in were descended. A second son, Cathasach, died c. 650, and a grandson of Domnall, also called Cathasach, died c. 688.
